About The Position

The Court Services Division of the Nova Scotia Department of Justice is dedicated to excellent service and the provision of fair and accessible system of justice, including court administration and security. The Division provides administrative support to the courts listed: Nova Scotia Court of Appeal, Supreme Court of Nova Scotia (including Family Division), Provincial Court, Family Court, Small Claims Court, Probate Court and Bankruptcy Court. The courts act independently from the government to address individual cases. Sheriff Services is part of the Nova Scotia Department of Justice. Our employees contribute to the maintenance of a just, peaceful, and safe society by maintaining responsibility for Court security, the transportation of prisoners, and service of civil documents in the Province. As Sheriff, you are accountable for the performance and delivery of Sheriff Services (both operationally and managerially) to all levels of court. This includes managing human, financial and technical resources. In this position, you provide support for and deliver excellent customer service to the Judiciary, while maintaining effective working relationships with the legal community, other government departments, senior Court officials, and the public.

Requirements

  • A university degree and several years of management experience. An equivalent combination of education, training, or experience may be considered.
  • Familiarity with Court systems.
  • Understanding of Safety, Court security and transportation of prisoners in custody.
  • Administrative, management and human resources skills.
  • Proven ability to manage change within a unionized environment.
  • Experience leading and building a team, achieving consensus and cooperation among staff.
  • Excellent communication and public relations skills.
  • Talent in liaising and developing professional relationships with stakeholders.
  • Ability to develop, plan and implement policy, procedures, and training programs.
  • Understanding of accounting and fiscal management practices.
  • Experience in the administration of a Use of Force program.
  • Working knowledge of relevant Federal and Provincial Acts, regulations, and rules including the Civil Procedure Rules.

Nice To Haves

  • An operational understanding of weapons systems in a law enforcement environment, including critical incident management.
  • A background in Justice, policing, security, or civil enforcement related environments.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and implementing policies, procedures, and training programs.
  • Managing risk relating to the operational functions of Sheriff Services.
  • Ensuring policies and operating procedures are applied and adhered to by the Sheriff’s office to effect Court security, prisoner management and transportation.
  • Facilitating staff compliance with legislation such as the Civil Procedures Rules and other related Acts and regulations.
  • Performing accounting and banking procedures related to the Sheriff Trust Account.
  • Serving, administering, and executing various Court documents and orders.
