About The Position

The Sheriff shall have and exercise all powers and duties provided under the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the County of Luzerne. The Sheriff will serve as an Officer of the Courts, serving writs, complaints, court orders, warrants, and notices. They will also enforce court orders when directed by the Court, provide courtroom security, and transport inmates. Additionally, the Sheriff will issue firearm licenses, conduct property sales, and perform other duties as prescribed by County Council.

Requirements

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the goals and objectives of the Division of Judicial Services and Records
  • Proven knowledge of supervisory methods and techniques
  • Thorough knowledge of budget preparation
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of law enforcement, Sheriff’s operations, Criminal Rules and Procedures, and Rules of Evidence
  • Knowledge of record retention standards including maintenance, purging and retrieval of such records
  • Ability to motivate employees and establish working relationships with associates, representatives of the Court, County and State agencies, and the public
  • Ability to organize and coordinate an efficient workflow process
  • Proficient in the use of various computer software including but not limited to Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree program from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in Law Enforcement
  • Minimum of 2 years in a supervisory capacity
  • Certification under the Sheriff and Deputy Sheriff Education and Training Program (44 Pa. C.S.A. §7425)

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an Officer of the Courts
  • Serve writs, complaints and other forms of process, court orders, warrants and notices
  • Enforce Court orders when ordered by the Court
  • Provide and maintain courtroom security
  • Provide transportation to the Courts for Luzerne County Prison inmates; County jail inmates outside of Luzerne County and State Correctional Institution inmates; and extradited persons, as required for Luzerne County judicial proceedings
  • Issue firearm licenses to qualified residents of the County
  • Conduct sales of real estate and personal property located in Luzerne County in accordance with the Pennsylvania Rules of Civil Procedure
  • Perform such additional and related duties as may be prescribed by County Council pursuant to the Luzerne County Home Rules Charter and the Administrative Code of Luzerne County
