About The Position

The Emergency Shelter Team serve to minister to individuals in crisis who seek emergency shelter at the Rescue Mission. The Shelter Team is committed to embodying compassion and understanding while helping hurting people in Jesus name. They serve individuals who seek emergency shelter by providing intentional services related to a safe, secure and comfortable nights rest. These services include chapel services, overnight laundry, the opportunity to take a shower and shelter while sleeping. The Rescue Mission of Roanoke has been on the mission of “Helping Hurting People in Jesus’ Name.” The Mission nourishes the mind, body, and spirit, through dedicated team members and volunteers that extend the compassion of Christ to our neighbors in need. We are a non-profit, faith based, equal opportunity employer. The Rescue Mission is open 24 hours/day and 365 days/year and provides food, clothing, shelter, an on-site clinic, Recovery Program, case management, and aftercare services. All people in crisis are served regardless of race, gender, creed, age, or ethnicity. In addition, the Rescue Mission operates a Donation and Recycling Center, 2nd Helpings – Gallery and Shop, Thrift 460, and has an online store presence. All proceeds from sales benefit the programs of the Rescue Mission.

Requirements

Possess a sincere love of Christ and maintain a Christian walk that is evident of that love.
Individual must be willing to adhere to The Rescue Mission of Roanoke’s Code of Ethics.
Demonstrates a genuine interest in the safety and well-being of our guests and team members.
Strong work ethic and commitment to work as scheduled to include holidays and weekends as assigned.
Strong listening, as well as written & verbal communication skills to execute instructions, keep others informed and exhibit professionalism.
Demonstrated attention to detail/strong organizational skills to assist with multiple daily assignments and special projects.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Gmail, basic grammar

Nice To Haves

Experience working with individuals living with mental health and substance use disorder helpful.
Desire to minister to and love those who need help and Jesus Christ
Patient and compassionate presence
Previous experience with conflict resolution techniques, helpful

Responsibilities

Provide guidance and support to the shelter guests to ensure processes are followed for safe and secure environment for everyone.
Monitor as extra support during chapel services and meals.
Make rounds of the facility and grounds including room checks and promoting a healthy environment for guests, volunteers and team members.
Accurate data input of records/documents, inspections, incident reports, medication distribution, phone calls, supply maintenance.
Meet unmet needs while providing a safe and secure environment by building healthy relationships with our guests and our team.
Assist volunteers and/or interns to include training.
Complete other duties as assigned by the leadership/management.
