Coordinates and supervises the daily management of the shelter facility and its surroundings, including scheduling and supervision of shelter staff, addressing the operational needs of the shelter, and working collaboratively with the program manager to facilitate trauma-informed, person-first, and grace-based services be delivered to all who seek The Tacoma Rescue Mission’s care.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Social Services or related field or the equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Experience working with or serving alongside marginalized communities.
  • 1+ years’ operating in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • Evidence of good judgment and ability to make quick decisions.
  • Comfortability setting professional boundaries and expectations with guests, residents, donors, volunteers, and team members.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and foster teamwork in a diverse environment using effective and thoughtful interactions and communication.
  • Effective de-escalation skills.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Ability to work in and effectively respond to a fast-paced, high-stress environment.
  • Capacity to accomplish multiple tasks within a short time.
  • Skilled in clear and effective written, verbal, and electronic communication.
  • Proficient clerical skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Basic operating knowledge of office equipment, computers, and Microsoft Office Suites.
  • Basic math and grammar skills.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures team members engage with guests, residents, volunteers, donors, and team members warmly, supporting an environment that fosters healthy relationships.
  • Supervises personnel (e.g., provide coaching and consultation on technical issues and adaptive challenges, professional development, strategic goals, job performance), ensuring ongoing support and development of effective leaders and high performing teams.
  • Monitors daily routines, confirming team members are following shelter processes and protocols and communicating effectively across shifts.
  • Schedules team members to cover shelter operations, preparing alternate coverage plans for relief and/or providing coverage or on-call support when necessary.
  • Responds to urgent situations on campus, regarding residents, team members, or shelter operations.
  • Assists Program Manager in reviewing and addressing guest grievances.
  • Administers urinalysis and breathalyzer tests for shelter guests as needed.
  • Completes assigned administrative tasks (i.e. reviews written reports daily, ensures staff are completing data entry as necessary, provides thorough documentation of events that occur during shifts, completes monthly reports).
  • Assists in ensuring the physical security and cleanliness of the property (i.e. trains staff on emergency preparedness plan, ensures chemicals are appropriately labeled with Safety Data Sheets, performs facility maintenance checks, submits work requests, calls pest control, oversees completion of resident chores, oversees turnover process of shelter units/beds and belongings).

  • Performs other duties as assigned to support others and ensure an efficient and effective work environment.
