About The Position

This is a full-time position for an Overnight Youth Support Specialist at Waypoint's Emergency Youth Shelter. The role involves ensuring the safety, wellbeing, and comfort of youth and young adults during overnight hours. Responsibilities include providing supportive supervision, conducting wellness and safety checks, assisting with morning routines, and contributing to a consistent, trauma-informed environment. The position requires working with a dedicated team to help young people build trust, develop life skills, and move toward independence.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in fast-paced or emotionally challenging situations.
  • Strong communication, relationship-building, and problem-solving skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including email, documentation, and data entry systems.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing positively to a collaborative team.
  • Some weekend availability required.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional education in Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, Criminal Justice, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience working with youth, particularly youth experiencing homelessness, trauma, or crisis, is highly valued.
  • Knowledge of Trauma-Informed Care, Positive Youth Development, Harm Reduction, and de-escalation techniques preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor the shelter throughout the overnight hours by conducting regular safety and wellness checks.
  • Maintain a calm, welcoming, and respectful environment for all youth.
  • Support evening-to-morning transitions between the Emergency Shelter and Youth Resource Center.
  • Assist with morning wake-ups, breakfast, hygiene needs, and daily departures.
  • Help maintain clean, organized, and welcoming living spaces, common areas, restrooms, and sleeping rooms.
  • Develop positive relationships with youth through empathy, consistency, and respect.
  • Utilize Trauma-Informed Care, Positive Youth Development, and Harm Reduction principles in every interaction.
  • Encourage healthy decision-making, personal responsibility, and independence.
  • Support youth in accessing food, hygiene supplies, community resources, and case management services.
  • Serve as a positive role model while maintaining healthy professional boundaries.
  • Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation support when needed.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies while consulting supervisors and on-call staff.
  • Promote a low-barrier, non-judgmental environment where youth feel emotionally and physically safe.
  • Document incidents, observations, and shift updates to ensure continuity of care.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues across shifts to ensure seamless support for youth.
  • Maintain inventory of shelter supplies and report maintenance or safety concerns.
  • Participate in supervision, staff meetings, training, and professional development.
  • Help strengthen the program by collaborating with teammates and sharing ideas for continuous improvement.
