About The Position

As a Sheet Metal Fabricator at a Modigent operating company, you will fabricate high-quality ductwork and sheet metal components for commercial HVAC systems. Working in the shop and supporting field operations, you will progressively develop skills in layout, cutting, forming, welding, assembly, and quality control of sheet metal products used in new construction, retrofit, and service applications. Progression through Levels I–IV is based on experience, demonstrated competency, ability to work independently, and leadership contribution.

Requirements

  • Level I: Limited to no prior experience; willingness to learn required.
  • Level II: 2–4 years of sheet metal fabrication or related experience.
  • Level III: 5+ years of progressive commercial sheet metal fabrication experience.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Welding certifications preferred for higher levels.
  • OSHA 10/30 preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license may be required depending on shop/field support needs.
  • Ability to lift/carry up to 50+ pounds; stand for extended periods; bend, stoop, kneel, and use hand/power tools.
  • Manual dexterity required for precise fabrication work.
  • Mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings (increasing complexity by level).
  • Strong commitment to safety, quality, and productivity.
  • Reliability, teamwork, and willingness to learn.
  • Progressive ability to work independently and lead others at higher levels.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with material handling, tool organization, and shop clean-up.
  • Learn and apply fundamental safety practices, tool usage, and PPE requirements.
  • Perform basic measuring, cutting, and simple forming tasks under close supervision.
  • Support assembly of basic ductwork components and fittings.
  • Follow instructions carefully and maintain a clean, organized work area.
  • Participate in safety meetings and training to build foundational skills.
  • Perform intermediate fabrication tasks with increasing independence, including accurate measuring, cutting, forming, and basic joining methods.
  • Assist with layout and production of standard ductwork, fittings, and transitions.
  • Operate common shop equipment (shears, brakes, plasma cutters, etc.) under guidance.
  • Support quality checks and basic documentation of fabricated materials.
  • Coordinate material flow and assist with preparation of materials for field delivery.
  • Continue developing knowledge of shop drawings, standards, and fabrication best practices.
  • Independently fabricate complex ductwork systems, fittings, and custom components with minimal supervision.
  • Read and interpret shop drawings, blueprints, and specifications to produce accurate work.
  • Operate a full range of fabrication equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Perform quality inspections, ensure dimensional accuracy, and support pressure testing or sealing as required.
  • Mentor lower-level fabricators and assist with training on equipment and techniques.
  • Coordinate with field teams and project leadership on material requirements and priorities.
  • Identify process improvements and contribute to shop efficiency and safety.
