About The Position

The Sheet Metal Fabricator (Machine Operator I) position is responsible for checking job sheets and setting up machines for operation. In this hands-on manufacturing role, team members have the opportunity to work with a variety of sheet metal fabrication equipment and build skills across multiple machines and processes. The team member may operate different machines to complete assigned tasks, including press brakes, lasers, water jets, turrets, rollers, and panel benders. The team member must be able to read blueprints and troubleshoot basic equipment and machines. This position is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working with their hands, learning new equipment, and seeing their work contribute directly to the manufacturing of our products. The team member must maintain a clean and safe working environment.

Requirements

• Previous experience with basic hand tools.
• Ability to read blueprints, use a tape measure, and work from job routings or manufacturing instructions.
• Demonstrate strong interpersonal communication skills
• Recognize and react to abnormal operating conditions
• Work effectively both independently and as part of a team
• Use and wear personal protective equipment as indicated by the task or environment
• Hear safety alarms and other co-workers
• Perform basic counting tasks
• Read tape measure, safety manuals, work orders, and blueprints effectively
• Follow instructions from supervisors and other co-workers
• Understand and identify safety issues
• Maintain balance when walking and standing on potentially slippery work floors
• Maintain balance when climbing on a portable step to retrieve parts
• Individually lift and manipulate parts/equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
• Operate an overhead hoist to assist with heavy lifting of parts, materials, and equipment
• Tolerate constant standing and walking throughout the shift
• Use both hands for tool and machine operation, carrying of parts, and assisting co-workers with heavy lifting of parts
• Operate and access heavy equipment safely and effectively
• Understand and follow required task sequences and safety procedures

Nice To Haves

• 1 or more years of metal fabrication experience preferred.
• Previous experience with Pierce as a Team Member or Contractor.
• Experience operating or setting up fabrication equipment such as press brakes, lasers, water jets, turrets, rollers, or panel benders.

Responsibilities

• Communicate verbally with co-workers to promote teamwork and maintain a safe working environment
• Operate a variety of different sheet metal fabrication machines and equipment to include but not limited to: press brakes, lasers, water jets, turrets, rollers, and panel benders
• Develop skills across multiple fabrication machines and processes based on production needs
• Set up and prepare parts for cutting and forming operations
• Use computer systems to support machine setup and operation
• Load/unload materials into machines and equipment
• Read and apply measurements to parts and equipment
• Read and understand blueprints, schematic diagrams, etc.
• Read and interpret job routings and paperwork
• Identify basic machine or process issues and assist with troubleshooting to keep production moving
• Lift light and/or heavy parts on and off a cart, floor, shelf, etc.
• Use a cart to push/pull equipment and parts to and from designated areas
• Follow written and verbal instructions to complete tasks
• Work collaboratively with team members to meet safety, quality, and production expectations
• Assist co-workers with lifting parts
• Identify and select appropriate parts and tools for assigned tasks
• Sweep and clean shop area
• Work overtime and rotate jobs as needed
• Grinding, buffing, drilling, and bending materials
• Assist in inventory of parts
• Operate a materials cart or forklift to transport truck parts to and from designated areas
