About The Position

The Part-Time Sewing Instructor plans and leads engaging sewing classes for older adults at multiple SHOPP program locations. The instructor teaches participants sewing fundamentals, machine operation, garment construction, pattern reading, and other sewing techniques while fostering creativity, confidence, and social engagement. The instructor creates an inclusive and supportive learning environment that accommodates varying skill levels and promotes lifelong learning.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated knowledge of sewing techniques, garment construction, pattern reading, and sewing machine operation.
  • Experience teaching or instructing individuals or groups.
  • Ability to adapt instruction to accommodate participants with varying skill levels and abilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple class locations.
  • Reliable transportation and willingness to travel between SHOPP program sites.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching sewing to older adults or adult learners.
  • Experience working in community-based or nonprofit programs.
  • Knowledge of adaptive teaching techniques for older adults.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Bilingual abilities are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and conduct engaging sewing classes for older adult participants.
  • Instruct participants in the safe operation and care of sewing machines and sewing equipment.
  • Demonstrate sewing techniques including threading machines, pattern layout, measuring, cutting, garment construction, alterations, and finishing methods.
  • Adapt lesson plans, projects, and instructional pace to meet participants' varying abilities, experience levels, and learning needs.
  • Assist participants in selecting projects that are appropriate for their skill level while encouraging creativity and independence.
  • Provide individual instruction, encouragement, and constructive feedback to participants throughout each class.
  • Foster a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment that encourages social interaction and skill development.
  • Prepare classroom materials, equipment, and supplies before each class and ensure proper cleanup following each session.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and submit required documentation in a timely manner.
  • Communicate equipment, supply, and participant needs to the Program Supervisor.
  • Ensure all safety procedures are followed during class instruction.
  • Participate in supervision, team meetings, and organizational initiatives
  • Maintain compliance with SHOPP personnel policies, procedures, and funder requirements
  • Complete accurate and timely documentation, reporting, and administrative tasks
  • Support program and organizational goals and meet established deadlines
  • Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and responsiveness in all aspects of work
  • Work independently and collaboratively to support team and program success
  • Demonstrate flexibility in supporting evolving program and organizational needs
