About The Position

Performs work operating a power sewing machine to sew or repair wearing apparel and other fabric articles for authorized patrons. The role involves sewing buttons, hems, seams, and straight edges; mending tears and rips; and shortening or lengthening garments. The operator also maintains a clean and orderly work area and performs other related duties as assigned.

Work is performed in well-lighted and ventilated areas that may be noisy due to multiple machines operating at once. Operators may be exposed to needle punctures and minor thread cuts. The position requires sitting for long periods and continual hand, arm, and finger movements. Lightweight items up to 10 pounds are handled continually, and items up to 30 pounds are handled occasionally.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or have lived in the United States for three years.

Requirements

• Twelve months of experience operating a power sewing machine to sew or repair clothing.
• A high school diploma or GED may substitute for six months of experience.
• Must be a U.S. citizen or have lived in the United States for three years.
• Ability to sit for long periods and continually move hands, arms, and fingers while sewing.
• Ability to handle items up to 10 pounds continually and up to 30 pounds occasionally.

Responsibilities

• Operate a power sewing machine to sew or repair clothing and other fabric articles.
• Sew buttons at marked locations, turn material under, and sew straight seams on items such as pockets, cuffs, and hems.
• Bind straight edges of material and mend tears or rips with straight stitching.
• Shorten or lengthen trousers and other garments.
• Maintain a clean and orderly work area.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
