About The Position

KCR Community Resources is seeking a compassionate, organized, and culturally responsive Settlement Worker to provide direct settlement and integration support to multi-barrier refugee claimants, asylum seekers, and other eligible participants through the BC SAFE HAVEN program. The Settlement Worker will support participants through needs and eligibility assessments, individualized support planning, life skills education, outreach, follow-up, and exit planning. This role also provides practical housing assistance, including support with safe and suitable housing, household furnishings, emergency temporary accommodations, and connections to community resources. This position requires strong interpersonal skills, sound judgment, cultural humility, and the ability to work effectively with participants who may be experiencing complex barriers, trauma, housing instability, language barriers, and settlement-related challenges.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education, such as a diploma or degree, in Human Services, Social Services, Community Development, or a related field.
  • Experience working with government-funded programs, community services, settlement services, or non-profit organizations is preferred.
  • Experience supporting multi-barrier immigrants, refugee claimants, asylum seekers, or individuals facing social, emotional, mental health, housing, or trauma-related challenges.
  • Understanding of the settlement needs and barriers faced by newcomers and vulnerable populations in Canada.
  • Knowledge of community resources, agencies, and specialized services for at-risk or marginalized populations.
  • Strong interpersonal, cross-cultural, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with participants with limited English language skills.
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency, including experience using databases, case management systems, and reporting platforms.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries and exercise sound judgment regarding financial, personal, medical, legal, confidentiality, and conflict-of-interest matters.
  • Ability to practice effective self-care while supporting participants with complex needs.

Nice To Haves

  • Language and cultural proficiency in Spanish, Arabic, Farsi, Pashto, or Turkish is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct intake and needs assessments with eligible participants.
  • Develop individualized, wraparound support plans through one-on-one consultation.
  • Provide settlement support, orientation, life skills education, and referrals based on participant needs.
  • Develop, update, and deliver group workshops on topics such as life skills, employability skills, social and emotional support, and other relevant settlement topics.
  • Support communication between participants and service systems where language and cultural barriers exist.
  • Provide outreach and home visits as needed.
  • Follow up with participants and referral agencies to assess service effectiveness.
  • Obtain written consent from participants for the release of information when required.
  • Assist eligible refugee claimants and their families in identifying safe and suitable housing options.
  • Liaise with landlords, property managers, community agencies, and service providers.
  • Support participants with housing applications, viewings, tenancy processes, and transition planning.
  • Coordinate emergency temporary accommodation when required, including identifying suitable hotel or motel options, arranging bookings, and supporting participants in moving toward longer-term housing solutions.
  • Work closely with the Manager in program planning and service delivery.
  • Maintain regular contact with community agencies to support participant access to services and resources.
  • Monitor, discuss, and evaluate participant cases in collaboration with appropriate service partners.
  • Promote BC SAFE HAVEN and related settlement services under the direction of the Manager.
  • Participate in team meetings, professional development, training opportunities, and short- and long-term program planning.
  • Support effective communication within the Immigrant Services team and help identify gaps or emerging issues in service delivery.
  • Maintain accurate participant records, program statistics, and case notes.
  • Input and update participant information in CARMIS and participant files.
  • Prepare monthly activity reports for the Manager.
  • Develop exit plans, conduct follow-up, and collect evaluation data.
  • Ensure required participant documents, disclaimers, and consent forms are completed.
  • Maintain confidentiality and ensure participant information is handled and disposed of securely.
