About The Position

The Set-Up Operator sets up and operates mechanical and hydraulic production machines and equipment to meet production schedules. Equipment may include metal fabricating machines, material-handling systems, automated lubrication systems, lock seamers, hydro welders, spot welders, presses, headers, cartomizers, head/bushing machines, tube benders, cutoffs, flex mills, and expanders/sizers. The operator may set up and operate several similar or related pieces of equipment within the department. The role includes adjusting tooling and equipment, using blueprints and route cards, identifying and addressing machine malfunctions, performing minor repairs and preventive maintenance, testing equipment after repairs, and conducting product quality checks. The operator also performs production and inventory documentation, maintains material flow and housekeeping, observes safety requirements, and works with the team to achieve company goals. Requirements

At least 6 months of previous manufacturing experience is preferred.
Complete a 90-day probationary (initial employment) period; the Set-Up Operator classification may be designated earlier if the employee demonstrates the ability to independently set up and operate assigned equipment.
Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, blueprints, maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write simple correspondence and interact cooperatively with supervisors and coworkers.
Ability to perform basic arithmetic using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; compute rates, ratios, and percentages; and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to use and interpret measuring gauges.
Ability to apply common-sense understanding to written, oral, or diagrammed instructions and address problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Responsibilities

Set up assigned department equipment by changing and adjusting tooling to meet required clearances and specifications.
Use blueprints and route cards to set up assigned equipment.
Visually inspect and listen to machines and equipment to identify causes of malfunctions.
Dismantle machines and equipment to access problem areas.
Perform minor machine repairs, including preventive maintenance.
Start machines and equipment to test their operation after repairs.
Perform quality control checks, including first- and last-piece inspections, to ensure products meet blueprint specifications.
Operate equipment to manufacture parts after required setups are completed.
Complete OSHA-required training and safety training updates as assigned by the supervisor.
Maintain a high standard of housekeeping in the department.
Perform other assigned duties, which may include hand welding and material handling.
Work within a team environment to achieve company goals and objectives.
Check that safety guards and switches are in place and in good working condition; report safety malfunctions immediately to the supervisor.
Complete required paperwork, including machine load card data, production and inventory tickets, timesheets, quality control data, first- and last-piece inspection records, and other required data.
Place setup and operator scrap in designated containers and document it as required.
Deliver overrun parts to the appropriate location and document them.
Complete job cards as requested by the supervisor.
Monitor material supplies at the assigned workstation to maintain smooth product flow.
