About The Position

Smalley is hiring a first-shift Set Up Operator at its Lake Zurich, Illinois location. The role involves setting up and operating manufacturing machines used to produce precision metal formed products. The operator learns to set up a portion of the machine groups and operate all machine groups in the assigned area, while supporting quality, production targets, and safe, efficient work. The position also assists with training machine operators and may participate in cross-departmental production work based on business needs.

Requirements

Experience working in a manufacturing or related environment.
Mechanical experience operating high-speed automatic and semi-automatic equipment.
Experience setting up and adjusting metal-forming processes, including stamping, forming, and shearing.
Experience troubleshooting production equipment and identifying machine problems.
Experience measuring parts with precision instruments, including micrometers and digital calipers.
Pass the required math and English exam.

Responsibilities

Learn to independently set up 25% and operate 100% of the machine groups in the assigned area.
Open and close each job.
Load wire efficiently and safely using appropriate tools and remove empty spools.
Measure and inspect wire quality throughout each step of the setup process.
Operate testing equipment, including micrometers and calipers.
Retrieve the gauges, tooling, racks, and materials needed for jobs.
Perform heat sampling.
Remove and install machine tooling.
Set up machines, adjust tooling, and set parameters for each job.
Assist leads and supervisors with teaching and training machine operators on day-to-day responsibilities.
Learn basic troubleshooting and machine adjustments.
Communicate regularly with machine operators about machine issues.
Perform wire rejection procedures.
Participate in cross-departmental production work based on business needs.
Learn and uphold quality standards to support customer satisfaction and work efficiency.
Work toward team and individual production targets.
