About The Position

This position is for a Sessional Lecturer to teach CSC413H5S LEC101 – Neural Networks and Deep Learning. The course provides an introduction to neural networks and deep learning, covering topics such as backpropagation, automatic differentiation, convolutional and recurrent neural networks, optimization and generalization methods, and applications in unsupervised and reinforcement learning. The estimated course enrollment is 60 students. The appointment dates are from January 1, 2027, to April 30, 2027. The salary rates vary based on the Sessional Lecturer rank: Sessional Lecturer I = $14,381; Sessional Lecturer I - Long Term = $16,080; Sessional Lecturer II = $16,080. The class schedule includes lectures on Wednesdays from 13:00 to 15:00 and practical sessions on Fridays from 9:00 to 10:00 and 10:00 to 11:00. TA support is provided at 54 hours per 30 students enrolled per semester.

Requirements

  • Completion of a graduate degree in Computer Science or education
  • Advanced comprehension of the subject matter as evidenced by research activity, industry experience, or teaching experience
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Developing and delivering lectures
  • Preparing tutorials, assignments, tests, and marking schemes
  • Maintaining a course website
  • Providing appropriate contact time outside of class to students through office hours, emails, the course website, and/or the course discussion board
  • Writing the TA contract(s) for the course and supervising the TAs
  • Managing the grading for the course, which is largely done by TAs
  • Doing any grading not handled by TAs
  • Invigilating the final exam
  • Managing the grades and submitting the final course grades
  • Dealing with student petitions
  • Setting and grading a make-up exam if required
  • Following the basic content and style used by the faculty members who normally teach the course
