About The Position

The Option Seminar provides third-year Engineering Science students with an introduction to their upper-year discipline of study, encouraging them to consider different educational and career pathways. Students will participate in sessions focused on research and industry directions, and the relationship between their Option/Major and its social & environmental context. Program-wide seminars will feature opportunities for career exploration. This course is offered on a credit/no credit basis, with credit awarded for attending sessions and completing written deliverables.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Engineering, English or a related discipline.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD in Engineering or English.
  • Experience teaching professional communication (both oral and written) in an engineering setting.
  • Past teaching within the Engineering Science curriculum.
  • Experience providing constructive feedback on both written and oral assignments in an engineering setting.
  • Experience leading a teaching team and/or calibrating grading of open-ended assignments.
  • Strong professional communication skills to effectively engage alumni and other guest speakers.
  • Ability to coordinate a team of other faculty.
  • Ability to deliver engaging and meaningful seminars.

Responsibilities

  • Planning and facilitating 12 hour-long Program-Wide Seminars throughout the academic year.
  • Supporting and coordinating 8 other seminar series run by the EngSci Major Chairs.
  • Preparing materials and delivering seminars.
  • Recruiting EngSci alumni and other guests to act as seminar speakers and panelists.
  • Moderating panel discussions.
  • Tracking student attendance at seminars.
  • Introducing, running, and assessing two CR/NCR assignments.
  • Communicating with the 8 Major Chairs about expectations for their seminar series.
  • Assisting Chairs in recruiting speakers and referring to resources for alumni recruitment.
  • Compiling attendance records for Major-Specific seminars.
  • Making a final determination of CR or NCR for each student based on attendance and assignment performance.
