Sessional Lecturer - GLA2080HF Innovation & the Energy Transition

University of TorontoToronto, ON
Onsite

About The Position

This course, GLA2080HF Innovation & the Energy Transition, examines the ongoing shift from a fossil fuel-based energy system to one reliant on renewables and low-carbon energy. It explores the geopolitical and industrial competition surrounding the development of technologies for the low-carbon economy, questioning whether the transition to a ‘net-zero’ economy will become a new arena for US-China competition. The course will analyze which countries, regions, and companies stand to gain or lose from this transition and identify major obstacles. It will break down key technologies, the policies supporting their growth, and recent developments in innovation policy such as America’s Inflation Reduction Act, China’s five-year plans, and Europe’s REPowerEU plan. Additionally, the course will discuss the importance of ‘critical minerals’ and the associated mining boom, as these are vital inputs for low-carbon technologies.
