About The Position

The Department of Geography and Planning is seeking a Sessional Lecturer to teach specific courses during the 2026-2027 Regular Session. This role involves delivering lectures, preparing course materials, and marking assignments for undergraduate students. The courses cover a range of topics including legal issues in planning, research methods, urban design, professional practice, and geographic information systems. The position is based in Saskatoon and requires adherence to the university's academic calendar and employment group guidelines.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a master’s degree in a related field (specific degree requirements vary by course, e.g., Geography, Planning, Urban Design, Urban Planning).
  • Extensive experience and professional practice in municipal planning, including knowledge of zoning, bylaw interpretation, land subdivision, conflict resolution, official plans, and land development (for PLAN 343.3).
  • Experience with legal issues in professional land use planning (for PLAN 343.3).
  • Knowledge of and experience in social science field methods and qualitative data collection and analysis (for PLAN 390.3).
  • Completion of a university instruction training course (for PLAN 390.3).
  • Minimum of two years of professional experience in planning/urban design (for PLAN 446.3).
  • Extensive professional experience in the planning profession, including municipal and private practice, with knowledge of land use zoning, development control, subdivision of land, conflict resolution, ethics in planning, and professional practice (for PLAN 495.3).
  • Experience with land developers, elected officials, and public engagement processes in land development (for PLAN 495.3).
  • Expertise in urban design (for PLAN 346.3).
  • Demonstrable training in Geomatics (for GEOG 322.3).
  • A valid driver’s license is required for any off-campus courses.

  • Proven record of effective teaching and mentoring of undergraduate students.
  • Professional practice in the provincial jurisdiction of Saskatchewan (for PLAN 343.3).
  • Practicing planner and member of the Saskatchewan Professional Planners Institute (preferred for PLAN 343.3, required for PLAN 495.3, and recommended for PLAN 390.3 and PLAN 446.3).
  • Previous teaching experience at a post-secondary educational institution (asset for PLAN 390.3 and PLAN 446.3).
  • Advanced degree in urban planning or urban design (for PLAN 390.3 and PLAN 446.3).
  • Membership in a related professional field (for PLAN 390.3 and PLAN 446.3).
  • PhD preferred (for GEOG 322.3).

Responsibilities

  • Teach the following courses during the 2026-2027 Regular Session: PLAN 343.3 (Legal Issues in Planning), PLAN 390.3 (Research and Field Methods in Planning), PLAN 446.3 (Advanced Urban Design Studio), PLAN 495.3 (Professional Planning Practice), PLAN 346.3 (Introduction to Urban Design), and GEOG 322.3 (Geographic Information Systems).
  • Deliver lectures and potentially labs as per the course schedule.
  • Prepare and mark assignments, exams, and other course-related materials.
  • Mentor and guide undergraduate students in their academic pursuits.
  • Ensure effective teaching and student engagement.
  • Adhere to university policies and procedures related to teaching and employment.
