About The Position

This is the first level in the Service Worker series. Performs skilled and semi-skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work in an assigned area of responsibility. This role involves maintaining parks, rights-of-way, parking lots, and bike paths, with a specific focus on irrigation systems. The position requires operating various equipment, explaining and enforcing rules, interacting with the public, and maintaining daily work records.

Requirements

  • One (1) year of experience in construction, maintenance, and repair work and/or in the operation of light, medium and heavy equipment related to area of assignment.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.
  • One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education.
  • Knowledge of rules, regulations, policies, and procedures relating to area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of materials, tools, equipment, safety hazards and precautions common to the assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Knowledge of hazard, safety rules, precautions related to equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of confined space entry procedures.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, technical diagrams, and maps.
  • Ability to understand and follow safe working practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal courteously with the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and citizens.
  • Ability to operate and perform maintenance and minor repair on light, medium, and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to perform general maintenance and service requirements of equipment in area of responsibility.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and work independently.
  • Ability to accurately and timely complete reports and logs; record daily work activities and enter and retrieve information on computers, cell phones, and tablets.
  • Ability to maintain the appropriate state of Arizona driver license with relevant endorsements.
  • Ability to coordinate hand and eye movements.
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.
  • Valid Arizona class D driver license

Responsibilities

  • Performs skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, and repair work, plumbing, landscaping, and repair of specialized equipment.
  • Operates various light, medium, and heavy equipment including trucks, truck with trailers.
  • May provide general direction to other employees and volunteers.
  • Uses various hand and power tools to accomplish tasks.
  • Explains and enforces rules and regulations pertaining to safety, barricading, and operation of equipment.
  • Notifies residents and businesses of work being performed, answers questions from citizens.
  • Maintains daily work records; may perform some computerized data entry work.
  • Transports and sets up supplies and equipment; makes required safety checks.
  • Maintains parks, rights-of-way, parking lots, and bike paths (irrigation systems).
  • Maintains and adjusts sprinkler systems, provides irrigation services, and maintains irrigation equipment.
  • Inspects, operates, and maintains sprinkler and drip irrigation systems and performs preventative maintenance and repairs as needed.
  • Services, repairs, and maintains various mechanical parts and equipment of various parks, trails, facilities, and sports complexes.
  • Monitors and ensures all irrigation equipment always remains operational.
  • Responds to and resolves citizen complaints pertaining to park facilities.
  • Explain and enforces park policies and regulations to park patrons.
  • Maintains high visibility to dissuade vandalism and crime in park facilities.
  • Ensures that reserved facilities are maintained in a safe, clean condition; checks for permits.
  • Provides assistance in emergency situations; calls for police or medical assistance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
