About The Position

Join our Parks and Recreation team as a Caretaker and help provide clean, safe, and welcoming facilities for the community. This position plays an important role in maintaining community centers, reservation halls, and other public spaces used for programs, meetings, celebrations, and special events. As a Caretaker, you will perform a variety of custodial duties, operate commercial cleaning equipment, and assist with setting up and taking down tables, chairs, and other equipment for facility reservations. This position is ideal for someone who takes pride in their work, can work independently or as part of a team, and enjoys contributing to public spaces that serve residents throughout Wyandotte County. The Caretaker classification is needed to support the daily operation, cleanliness, safety, and readiness of Parks and Recreation facilities. This position performs general custodial work at community centers, reservation halls, and other assigned locations and assists with room setup and teardown for reservations, programs, meetings, and special events. The classification reflects the physical and operational demands of the work, including the use of commercial cleaning equipment, movement of tables and chairs, handling of cleaning supplies, and travel between facilities as needed. Establishing this position helps ensure that public facilities are maintained to an appropriate standard and remain welcoming and available for community use.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree (G.E.D.) or any equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  • General knowledge of custodial equipment, cleaning products, and cleaning procedures.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Must possess the physical strength, stamina, mobility, and agility necessary to perform the essential duties of the position, including standing and walking for extended periods; frequently bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, and pulling; and lifting, carrying, moving, and arranging furniture, cleaning equipment, supplies, tables, and chairs.
  • Must be available to work varied shifts, evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by departmental operations, facility schedules, reservations, and special events.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain acceptable driving record per the Unified Government’s Human Resources Driver Safety, Accident Reporting, and Vehicle Use policy throughout employment with the Unified Government.
  • As a condition of employment all employees must pass a post offer criminal history background check, physical examination and drug screen.
  • All employees must also submit proof of identity and employment eligibility.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience cleaning and maintaining public buildings, community centers, event facilities, or other high-traffic facilities.
  • Experience operating commercial custodial equipment, including floor machines, buffers, carpet extractors, and wet/dry vacuums.
  • Knowledge of the proper use, handling, and storage of cleaning chemicals and supplies.
  • Basic experience identifying and reporting building maintenance or safety concerns.
  • Experience working independently and prioritizing assignments across multiple facilities.
  • Customer service experience involving interaction with facility users, renters, or the general public.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans and maintains community centers, reservation halls, offices, restrooms, kitchens, common areas, and other assigned facilities.
  • Sweeps, mops, scrubs, strips, waxes, and buffs floors using appropriate custodial equipment and procedures.
  • Vacuums and cleans carpets, rugs, furniture, windows, walls, doors, fixtures, and other surfaces.
  • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, drinking fountains, kitchens, and other public-use areas.
  • Empties trash and recycling containers and transports materials to designated disposal areas.
  • Restocks paper products, soap, cleaning supplies, and other facility materials.
  • Assists with the setup and teardown of tables, chairs, furniture, and equipment for reservations, meetings, programs, and special events.
  • Rearranges rooms and facilities according to reservation layouts or departmental instructions.
  • Inspects assigned facilities and reports maintenance concerns, safety hazards, property damage, supply needs, or unusual conditions to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Cleans entrances, sidewalks, parking areas, and grounds immediately surrounding assigned facilities.
  • Removes snow, ice, litter, debris, and other materials from entrances and pedestrian areas as assigned.
  • Safely uses and stores cleaning chemicals, equipment, and supplies in accordance with established procedures and safety standards.
  • Secures facilities by checking doors, windows, lights, and designated areas as assigned.
  • May travel between Parks and Recreation facilities to provide custodial or reservation support.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
