Service Designer, Intelligence & Investigations

OpenAI•San Francisco, CA
•$198,000 - $288,000

About The Position

The Service Designer will shape how investigative cases move through OpenAI, from the first signal through review and action. Working alongside investigators, the designer will understand what individual cases require and how the overall workflow affects investigators’ ability to act. They will bring those insights to people who shape investigative operations and to engineers building the underlying systems, collaborating to identify useful changes and assess them in real cases. The role sits within the Intelligence and Investigations (I2) team, which provides intelligence to decision makers across OpenAI and investigates severe misuse of its products. The team uses investigations and analysis of a wide range of data sources to provide actionable quantitative and qualitative intelligence to leadership. Its work includes disrupting real-world violence, protecting children, and preventing catastrophic harms from AI misuse.

Requirements

  • Experience designing services around the needs of the people who use and operate them.
  • Ability and interest in learning how specialists work and drawing on different perspectives to understand a service spanning multiple teams.
  • Experience working with operational and engineering teams to put a service design into practice.
  • Comfort discussing how a technical choice in one part of a workflow affects people elsewhere.
  • Interest in evaluating what happens after a design is put into use, including whether a change benefits the full investigation workflow.

Responsibilities

  • Work alongside investigators to understand how cases move across teams and systems, and consider the implications for people at risk, people whose activity is under review, and those responsible for acting on findings.
  • Combine insights from individual cases with operational data to identify where changes would help most and whether they should address workflows, tools, or both.
  • Lead cross-team efforts to map investigative workflows, design improvements with the people who use and operate them, and put agreed changes into practice.
  • Guide engineering decisions about how investigative systems fit together to support the overall workflow.
  • Evaluate changes in practice to determine whether they help investigators act in time, make well-supported decisions, and sustain demanding work.
