About The Position

Performs general cleaning, maintenance, and repair of transit fleet, transit and fleet buildings, and bus shelters. Work is performed primarily outdoors with exposure to all weather and traffic conditions, hazardous chemicals, fluids, dirt, dust, fumes, noise, and vibration. The role requires heavy physical work including standing, walking, balancing, bending, stooping, climbing, crouching, kneeling, squatting, pushing, pulling, and reaching. Employees must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull items weighing up to 100 pounds. The position involves competing demands, multiple tasks, deadlines, occasional work beyond normal hours, and responding to customer issues. Regular attendance is essential, and the position is subject to drug testing. This is a full-time, regular, non-exempt, union-represented position with the Transit Department, graded BC04.

Requirements

  • Six (6) months of custodial experience to include minor facility, or grounds, maintenance, repair, and upkeep.
  • A valid driver's license may be required or preferred.
  • If applicable, position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City of Las Cruces policies.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, techniques, activities, rules, and regulations used to effectively perform custodial work, general maintenance, and upkeep of grounds and facilities.
  • Knowledge of current principles of record keeping and records management.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of effective research methods and data analysis, customer service, and problem resolution techniques.
  • Knowledge of occupational and environmental safety and health hazards, and safety practices.
  • Knowledge of safe and effective use and maintenance of related tools, materials, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of current methods and standards for preparing effective business correspondence.
  • Knowledge of correct English usage, grammar, composition, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
  • Knowledge of business and personal computers and related software applications.
  • Knowledge of City organization, operations, policies, and procedures to effectively perform the required functions and duties of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Performs cleaning duties on vehicles, facilities, and bus stop amenities to ensure the upkeep, neatness, and sanitation of various assigned facilities, passenger waiting areas, and other equipment and materials serving the community.
  • Uses and institutes the appropriate protective equipment and various cleaning supplies and chemicals to clean, sanitize, and deodorize facilities, vehicles, and passenger waiting areas.
  • Services, cleans, inspects, and performs general maintenance of bus shelters, bus stops, and passenger waiting areas; assists the building maintenance staff with all custodial activities and the maintenance of transit facilities.
  • Creates and updates information in various mediums and formats; performs data entry and records management related to the services and functions assigned; prepares various special and recurring reports, forms, and other documents to provide accurate and timely information.
  • Responds to service calls for the repair and maintenance of assigned structures or facilities; may assist with minor vehicle repairs, transportation of tools and equipment, and delivery of fuel to vehicles or equipment.
  • Cleans, maintains, and repairs various buses, dial-a-ride, administration, and service vehicles for the City and its many departments.
  • Sanitizes, cleans, and checks all transit vehicles daily at several locations around the city; checks various locations, fleet yard, NMSU, and transit hub.
  • Organizes and restocks vehicles with proper supplies and appropriate PPE; clean sheds and manages inventory.
