About The Position

Vanderbilt University Public Safety (VUPS) is part of the Office of the Assistant Vice Chancellor/Chief of Police for the Division of Administration. The department has over 300 employees and is divided into two bureaus: Campus & Administrative, and VU Medical Center, each led by a Deputy Chief of Police. VUPS employs commissioned officers, non-academy-trained security officers, and administrative staff. Management reserves the right to modify job assignments and make reasonable accommodations for qualified employees to perform essential functions.

Requirements

  • High School Education or G.E.D required.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
  • Graduate of an accredited, approved Police Academy required.
  • Certified police officer meeting all of the requirements for P.O.S.T. certification in Tennessee or be eligible for certification immediately upon hire required.
  • Meet standards to receive a commission from the Metropolitan Police Department necessary.
  • Three (3) years of experience with an accredited law enforcement agency is required.
  • Prior law enforcement experience as a certified officer must be within the past five (5) years is required.
  • Stand for long periods.
  • Walk, climb, and lift.
  • Meet written departmental standards on appearance/grooming.
  • Pass a thorough background investigation demonstrating good moral character, a good driving record, and no prior criminal convictions that would prohibit P.O.S.T. certification.
  • Pass a medical examination including vision screening and drug testing; must obtain immunizations and medical tests as required for patient care and high-risk areas.
  • Pass a Psychological Evaluation.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year of experience as a Corporal at VUPD is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct field supervision of police, master police, and security officers in routine patrol, directed patrol, community policing, and special event activities at the shift level.
  • Reviews and assists officers with incident reports, accident reports, and other daily reports, ensuring accuracy of information including case number, report number, and classification. Prepares routine and special reports and submits them for review.
  • May train new police officers and evaluate them according to the Field Training Program.
  • Monitors and coaches others for improved work performance and participates in counseling sessions.
  • Conducts performance evaluations fairly and impartially.
  • Creates Operations Plans for various special events and law enforcement activities.
  • Serves as a first responder for all emergency calls including alarms, hazardous material spills, traffic crashes, criminal activity, assistance for injured/sick, and crimes in progress.
  • Responds to non-emergency calls including law enforcement or safety and security concerns, situations indicating potential for violence, and situations requiring coordination with other VU departments.
  • Responds to general calls for service such as building access/locking, assisting motorists, or providing personal safety.
  • Provides escorts for money and persons for protection.
  • Assists other agencies as requested.
  • Provides backup for other officers as necessary.
  • Assists medical personnel in the detention of psychiatric patients.
  • Provides protection and secure transportation services for psychiatric patients.
  • Serves the community through proactive patrol, working with zone contacts to identify potential security situations, and developing crime prevention strategies.
  • Identifies potential security-related conditions and leads problem-solving through partnerships to develop prevention strategies.
  • Provides safety, crime prevention, and community policing information to contacts during patrol duties.
  • Coordinates with VPD Community Relations personnel on physical security, safety information, and crime prevention issues.
  • Develops rapport with members of the university community and surrounding areas, and participates in community relations activities.
  • Assists community members with the criminal justice system and related matters.
  • Provides initial investigation for all calls of criminal activity and accidents.
  • Protects and maintains crime scenes.
  • Coordinates with detectives regarding cases requiring additional expertise or involvement from CIU.
  • Interviews victims, witnesses, and suspects, informing them of available options and processes.
  • Photographs and processes crime scenes or coordinates resources for processing.
  • May conduct photo lineups and other investigative duties.
  • Provides crime prevention information to victims to reduce re-victimization.
  • Performs field stops and interviews.
  • Makes arrests, issues citations, and gives warnings.
  • Prepares and submits applicable offense reports, follow-up reports, and other documentation.
  • Appears in court as a prosecuting officer or witness and presents testimony.
  • Searches prisoners and provides custody throughout the booking process.
  • May be required to appear at university administrative hearings to provide testimony.
  • Prepares and submits applicable follow-up reports.
  • Provides security for events such as athletic events, concerts, speakers, visiting dignitaries, commencement, and other social activities requiring crowd control and order maintenance.
  • Coordinates with other agencies as necessary.
  • May be assigned or assume police supervisory or command responsibilities during special events, dignitary details, and other assignments.
