About The Position

A successful candidate will play an active role in the City of College Park’s existing operational success. The purpose of the position is to provide supervision of personnel in the protection of life and property, prevention of the commission of crimes, and the preservation of peace within the city. The Sergeant is exposed to various incident settings and must rely on previous training and experience in the application of procedures and allocation of personnel. Successful performance results in effective law enforcement practices contributing to the safety/well-being of the community. Errors in the work can endanger the lives of city residents and personnel and jeopardize property. Independent judgment is required to identify, select, and apply the most appropriate of available guidelines and procedures as well as interpret precedents. This position is responsible for law enforcement supervisory work ensuring the protection of life and property and enforcement of laws and ordinances by police officers on an assigned watch or detectives in the Criminal Investigations Section. Work involves the monitoring of radio communications to ensure preventive patrol and call response operations are conducted in accordance with accepted standards of police operations and departmental policies and that officers have backup assistance available as needed. Work also involves a wide variety of administrative duties including making daily work assignments, determining that assigned personnel are available for duty and calling in replacements as authorized, holding daily roll call sessions, and holding training sessions on laws or procedures. At scenes of major crimes or accidents, incumbents assume command until relieved by a ranking officer.

• Associate’s degree with course work in political science, criminology, criminal justice, or related field; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• A minimum of three (3) years of law enforcement experience including two (2) years as a City of College Park Police Officer; must be a certified Field Training Officer.
• Meet POST requirements for Peace Officer Certification and/or academy admittance according to GA law.
• Must complete module one of Georgia Post Supervision Training or FBI-Leeda Supervisor Leadership Institute; equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Must have a valid Georgia driver's license and must be a US citizen.
• Experience in communicating with diverse communities, and in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
• Proficiency in MS Office Suite, as well as knowledge and understanding of the organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.

Responsibilities

• Enforces local, state, and federal laws.
• Supervises police officers and other assigned staff; supervises the scheduling and coordination of shift changes; trains personnel in proper work methods; assigns, delegates and reviews work; conducts roll call, training, and performing weapons, vehicle, and uniform inspections; maintains administrative records and personnel file; hears and resolves minor complaints; counsels subordinates and makes recommendations and/or disciplinary action; analyzes, reviews and advises personnel regarding work procedures to ensure compliance with departmental rules and regulations; periodic evaluation of employee performance.
• Maintains law and order; protects lives and property by supervising field personnel and participating in duties; patrolling assigned geographic zone; receives and responds to calls assigned by EOC via radio and CAD equipment; takes appropriate action; handles stressful situations according to department policy/procedure; provides back-up for calls; maintains traffic control through observation and use of speed detection devices; tests and detains drivers suspected of DUI; responds to major crime scenes; writes incident reports; attends court; transports prisoners; locates defendants and serves criminal warrants; performs other Police Officer duties as necessary.
• Participates in investigating criminal law violations occurring within the City limits; obtains evidence and compiles information regarding crimes; prepares cases for filing of charges; testifies in court.
• Monitors radio and assists dispatcher; requests assistance from other emergency personnel; notifies shift commander of major incidents, accidents, or emergencies; coordinates investigations with other agencies; reviews, approves, and evaluates reports; prepares necessary reports concerning shift activities; assists with the compilation of crime analysis reports; answers inquiries from the public requesting/giving information and handling investigation complaint.
• Coordinates and supervises the training, assignment, and development of subordinate police officers.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
