About The Position

Under general supervision, this promotional opportunity involves supervising and participating in police patrol, traffic, criminal investigation, training, administration, crime prevention, community relations, and other assigned programs or functions. This is a supervisory position responsible for coordinating and overseeing the work of staff assigned to a specific area of law enforcement functions. The role includes supervising and participating in field activities during an assigned law enforcement shift, inspecting officers, disseminating current information, maintaining discipline, assisting officers in investigations, patrolling the City, participating in normal patrol activities, assisting officers in report preparation and review, potentially appearing in court, maintaining contact with other law enforcement agencies, providing information to the public, conducting in-service training, preparing performance evaluations, preparing general reports of field activities, performing special investigative assignments, supervising and participating in criminal investigation, training, administration, crime prevention, community relations, and other assigned programs or functions, providing information and assistance to the public, checking holding facility and building security during shift, and potentially performing special duties in recruiting and training, intelligence, public safety dispatch, and administrative support. The Sergeant may also assume the responsibilities of a Police Lieutenant in their absence and represent assigned functions with City staff and other governmental agencies as delegated.

Requirements

Possession of an appropriate California driver's license.
Graduation from high school or G.E.D.
Possession of intermediate POST certification or graduation from an accredited "two" year college or university with major course work in police science or closely related field.
Five years of sworn law enforcement experience.
Lateral entry officers participating in promotional examinations must have three years of experience with the Montebello Police Department.
Full-time City employees are eligible to apply.

Responsibilities

Supervise and participate in police patrol, traffic, criminal investigation, training, administration, crime prevention, community relations, and other assigned programs or functions.
Coordinate and oversee the work of staff assigned to a specific area of law enforcement functions.
Supervise and participate in field activities during an assigned law enforcement shift.
Inspect officers and disseminate current information before officers leave for assigned patrol areas.
Maintain discipline and ensure Department rules and policies are followed.
Assist officers in initial investigations, including gathering evidence, questioning witnesses, and apprehension and interrogation of suspects.
Patrol the City and assist officers on all calls when necessary.
Participate in normal patrol activities, including enforcing local and State laws, issuing citations, making arrests, and booking and transporting prisoners.
Assist officers in preparing reports and perform initial review of prepared reports.
Appear in court to present evidence and testimony.
Maintain contact with other law enforcement agencies.
Give information and directions to the public.
Conduct in-service training and prepare performance evaluations.
Prepare general reports of field activities.
Perform special investigative assignments.
Provide information and assistance to the public.
Check holding facility and building security during shift.
May perform special duties in recruiting and training, intelligence, public safety dispatch, and administrative support.
May assume the responsibilities of a Police Lieutenant in the Lieutenant's absence.
Represent assigned functions with City staff and other governmental agencies as delegated.
