Sensor Characterization Co-Op

Laminar•Somerville, MA

About The Position

Laminar is seeking a Sensor Characterization Co-Op to test and analyze new sensing technologies integrated into its industrial sensing stack. The role focuses on improving sensor design, establishing noise and drift characteristics, and determining Limits of Detection (LOD) for industry-relevant chemicals. The co-op will own sensor testing activities, from experiment design and sample preparation through data collection, analysis, and presentation of results to engineering teams. The role also supports customer-driven use-case exploration, including material fingerprinting and concentration tests, and helps develop and refine calibration procedures. Reproducibility is central: the co-op will maintain a lab notebook, write and refine Standard Operating Procedures, and organize raw data for future comparison. The position calls for hands-on laboratory work, structured experimentation, and collaboration with the sensor R&D team.

Requirements

  • Have or be pursuing a degree in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Be detail-oriented and able to follow experimental procedures, as well as constructively critique them.
  • Be willing to perform a wide variety of hands-on engineering and technician tasks.
  • Have coursework or experience in chemistry, physics, optical engineering, or a related field.
  • Be comfortable with hands-on laboratory work and running structured experiments.
  • Have statistics and data analysis skills using Python, MATLAB, or similar tools.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with spectroscopy and electrical impedance measurement is a plus, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the sensor R&D team to design testing procedures, conduct tests, and analyze data to characterize new sensor performance.
  • Support customer-driven use-case exploration by running material fingerprinting and concentration tests, analyzing data, and preparing customer-facing slides.
  • Prepare samples at known concentrations, including serial dilutions and emulsifications, while following lab-safety protocols.
  • Use statistical methods to calculate Limits of Detection for industrially relevant chemicals.
  • Maintain a lab notebook, write and refine Standard Operating Procedures, and organize raw data to support reproducibility and future comparison.
  • Design, test, and refine calibration procedures for the new sensing stack.

Benefits

  • Dynamic and inclusive work environment.
  • Opportunities for growth and professional development.
  • Access to Greentown Labs’ extensive network of cleantech startups.
