Senior Wire Harness Design Engineer - Small Platforms

TEKsystems•Austin, TX
•$140,000 - $170,000•Onsite

About The Position

An innovative defense technology company is seeking Senior Wire Harness Design Engineers to support its Small Platforms product line. The role owns both the architecture and implementation of prefabricated wiring systems, combining work that may be split between separate roles at larger companies. The engineer should be comfortable making independent design decisions and working closely with mechanical engineering because harness design directly informs mechanical integration. Work spans products at different stages of maturity, from an actively produced platform to programs in early concept and first-hardware phases. Approximately 80% of the work is designing and routing harnesses at a workstation, and 20% is spent on the production floor verifying designs and supporting builds. This is a permanent, fully onsite position based in Austin, Texas.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience is considered.
  • 510+ years of experience in wire harness design, routing, or electrical integration.
  • Demonstrated experience owning both harness architecture and implementation, rather than only one portion of the process.
  • Hands-on experience with ECAD tools such as Zuken E3, Siemens Capital, EPLAN, or similar; PLM systems; and MCAD platforms such as NX, SolidWorks, Creo, or CATIA.
  • Ability to independently select components and explain engineering decision-making.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, particularly with mechanical engineering teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Automotive EWIS or harness design experience, including experience with companies such as Tesla, Rivian, Ford, GM, or Lucid.
  • Experience supporting autonomous systems, robotics, defense, aerospace, or advanced vehicle platforms.
  • Background improving design workflows, automation, or engineering processes.
  • Previous project leadership or informal team leadership experience.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and implement wiring systems for prefabricated harnesses across multiple small-platform programs.
  • Route and package cable and harness assemblies in 3D CAD environments, coordinating closely with mechanical engineering teams.
  • Select cables, connectors, and electrical components and justify design decisions based on functional requirements.
  • Develop and maintain schematics and harness documentation using ECAD, PLM, and MCAD tools.
  • Support new product development and continuous improvement of existing designs.
  • Identify and improve process gaps and workflow inefficiencies.
  • Verify harness designs on the production floor and ensure builds align with released documentation.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive health insurance; the company pays 100% of employee premiums and 80% of dependent premiums.
  • Dental and vision insurance; the company pays 100% of the basic-plan employee premium and 80% of dependent premiums.
