AppFolio Inc•San Diego, CA
•$125,600 - $157,000•Hybrid

About The Position

The Senior User Experience Designer will join AppFolio’s Maintenance team and design maintenance experiences for property managers, residents, vendors, and owners. The designer will own a set of early-stage, strategic Maintenance Performer initiatives, partnering with product management and engineering to turn ambiguous problems into clear directions and shipped experiences. The work includes designing new capabilities, including voice AI, and deciding how AI agents act while keeping people informed and in control. The role also encompasses vendor-network coordination, self-serve adoption, user research, product analytics, design-system evolution, and mentorship.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience in user experience or product design, including meaningful experience with complex workflows or operations products.
  • A portfolio demonstrating design process, judgment, and impact on work that began with open questions, including how the problem was narrowed and what shipped.
  • Experience designing for multiple user types within a single product or service.
  • Experience partnering directly with product management and engineering to shape roadmap and strategy, not only execute on them.
  • Experience leading design on ambiguous, early-stage initiatives and carrying them through to shipped work.
  • Breadth and flexibility to work across projects with differing skill needs, often on more than one project at a time.
  • Ability to make deliberate tradeoffs among the needs of several user types within one system.
  • Experience designing systems where an AI agent or automation acts on a user’s behalf, with human-in-the-loop controls.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, including driving design decisions with engineering, product management, and external partners.
  • Strong UX writing sensibility, particularly for notifications, follow-ups, and agent messages.
  • Systems-thinking mindset, including understanding how changes in one workflow affect others.
  • Use of AI-assisted tools in day-to-day design work.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing AI-driven, conversational, or voice experiences.
  • Experience with PropTech, real estate operations, or enterprise products.

Responsibilities

  • Own design for new Maintenance Performer capabilities from early problem framing through shipped experiences, including voice AI.
  • Partner with product management and engineering to frame problems, propose options, prototype, and help teams choose a direction.
  • Define what AI agents handle and where people remain in control; make agent actions visible, trustworthy, and correctable.
  • Design how a partner vendor network fits into maintenance coordination.
  • Shape voice AI conversations and how call outcomes are presented to property managers.
  • Make new Performer capabilities self-serve and build them around customers’ existing workflows and system of record.
  • Collaborate with product management, engineering, and external partners to drive design decisions, facilitate critique, and surface dependencies early.
  • Facilitate user research to validate design decisions and lead discovery when direction is open.
  • Contribute to and evolve AppFolio’s design system, and mentor other designers.
  • Measure the impact of design work and use product analytics to inform ongoing improvements.

Benefits

  • Eligible regular full-time employees receive benefits as part of a comprehensive Total Rewards package.
  • Opportunities for growth and compelling total rewards.
  • Coaching and mentorship, with time and tools to develop skills.
  • Hybrid work environment described as flexible, personal, and connected.
