Senior Underwriter – Ocean Marine Cargo
About The Position
The Senior Underwriter, Ocean Marine Cargo will analyze, evaluate, price, and manage new and renewal business within established guidelines to support growth of AXIS’s U.S. Ocean Marine Cargo portfolio. Initial areas of focus include Small and Middle Market, Large Complex Transit, Stock Throughput, and Excess Stock Exposure risks. The role also supports broader Marine Logistics capabilities that complement traditional Cargo coverage by addressing liability exposures throughout the movement, handling, and storage of goods. The position is a hands-on technical underwriting role for a professional with experience building and managing a complex Ocean Marine Cargo portfolio. The underwriter works with wholesale and retail brokers and handles the full underwriting lifecycle, from soliciting and evaluating submissions through risk analysis, structuring coverage, pricing, issuing indications, quotations and binders, and portfolio management. The successful candidate understands how cargo exposures interact with transportation, warehousing, contractual liability, and logistics-related risks across the supply chain.
Requirements
- 5+ years of direct Ocean Marine Cargo underwriting experience.
- Demonstrated experience building and managing complex Ocean Cargo business.
- Understanding of supply-chain exposures and contractual relationships among cargo owners, freight forwarders, logistics providers, warehouse operators, and transportation intermediaries.
- Ability to build and expand retail and wholesale broker relationships.
- Strong technical underwriting, portfolio management, negotiation, and presentation skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative underwriting environment with strong attention to detail.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with Logistics, Cargo Legal Liability, Warehouse Legal Liability, Errors & Omissions, Shipper’s Interest, or related transportation/logistics liability products.
- Marine Logistics or related supply-chain liability underwriting experience, including exposure to freight forwarders, logistics providers, warehouse operators, and transportation intermediaries.
Responsibilities
- Underwrite and manage complex Ocean Marine Cargo business, including Small and Middle Market, Large Complex Transit, Stock Throughput, and Excess Stock Exposure risks.
- Evaluate Marine Logistics opportunities that complement the Ocean Cargo portfolio, including Cargo Legal Liability, Warehouse Legal Liability, Errors & Omissions, Shipper’s Interest, and packaged logistics solutions.
- Assess supply-chain exposures involving freight forwarders, logistics providers, warehouse operators, transportation intermediaries, and other businesses involved in moving, handling, and storing goods.
- Review contractual and operational exposures to determine appropriate coverage structure, limits, retentions, pricing, terms, conditions, and endorsements.
- Work with brokers to identify cross-sell opportunities across Ocean Cargo and Logistics and develop broader solutions for clients with complex supply-chain exposures.
- Prospect for new business and develop strategies targeting Small to Middle Market and Large Complex Corporate risks.
- Develop and maintain wholesale and retail broker relationships to generate submissions and expand the portfolio.
- Solicit and evaluate submissions, analyze risks, structure terms and conditions, price business, prepare and issue indications, quotations and binders, and manage the portfolio.
