The Underground Senior Engineering and technical advisor is responsible for developing, delivering, and sustaining technical training and safety programs for underground mobile and fixed equipment maintenance teams. This role ensures craftsmen, technicians, and contractors are qualified to diagnose, repair, and return equipment to service safely and efficiently, in full compliance with regulatory requirements and site standards. The trainer partners with Maintenance, Safety, and Operations to reduce equipment downtime, improve PM compliance, and drive a proactive safety culture.

Requirements

  • 5–8 years of underground maintenance experience (mobile), including diagnostics and repair.
  • Proven experience training/mentoring technicians in an industrial or mining environment.
  • Strong applied knowledge of hydraulics, electrics (480V+ awareness), mechanical drives, diesel systems, and safe energy isolation.
  • Proficiency with CMMS (e.g., SAP PM, EAM, Pronto, or similar) and basic data analysis (Excel/Power BI).
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills; able to teach across skill levels and shifts.
  • Valid driver’s license; ability to work underground in all conditions and shifts.

Nice To Haves

  • Apprenticeship/Journeyman or Associate degree in Industrial Maintenance, Mechanical, Electrical, or Mechatronics.
  • OEM equipment training (e.g., Sandvik, Epiroc, Caterpillar & Normet).
  • MSHA: Part 48 Underground New Miner/Annual Refresher.
  • Current LOTO/Electrical Awareness; Confined Space; Working at Heights.
  • Ability to obtain site‑specific clearances and medicals.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct training needs analysis; design competency‑based training paths for mechanics, electricians, and planners.
  • Deliver hands‑on instruction on: hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical/PLC basics, mechanical systems, powertrain, diesel engines, lubrication, welding/brazing basics, precision maintenance, and condition monitoring (vibration, thermography, oil analysis).
  • Create and maintain SOPs, work instructions, troubleshooting guides, and job aids specific to site equipment (e.g., Jumbo, Long Hole, LHDs, haul trucks, conveyors, crushers, pumps, fans, power distribution).
  • Evaluate OEM manuals and CMMS data to align training with failure modes and PM strategies.
  • Coach techs on advanced diagnostics, safe isolation/LOTO, verification of zero energy, and return‑to‑service checks.
  • Deliver and document required safety training: hazard recognition, LOTO, JHA, confined space, hot work, electrical safety, working at heights, gas monitoring, and incident reporting.
  • Integrate safety into every technical module; run JHAs/JSAs and pre‑task risk assessments with crews.
  • Verify contractor compliance with MSHA, site policies, and OEM requirements; maintain accurate training records and certifications.
  • Support incident investigations (RCA, 5‑Why, ICAM or equivalent); identify corrective and preventive actions and embed learnings into training.
  • Lead field audits focusing on energy isolation, guarding, line‑of‑fire, and housekeeping.
  • Coordinate with supervisors to schedule training without impacting production.
  • Create and maintain a published skills matrix.
  • Maintain a rolling 12‑month training matrix and recertification calendar.
  • Report monthly KPIs and training effectiveness; recommend program updates and budget needs.
