About The Position

1X is building humanoid robots designed to perform household chores and tasks, aiming to give people back their time. This involves solving complex challenges in robotics, AI, and manufacturing at scale, within a safe form factor for home environments. The company has been developing these robots since 2014 and is now focused on shipping its flagship product, NEO, a home robot designed for real-world operation alongside people. The Apps team is responsible for building software that allows users to control Neo and for developers to create their own applications. This includes mobile and web apps for deploying, monitoring, and managing robots, providing operational visibility, and enabling easy home use of Neo. The Senior to Staff Graphics Engineer will lead the development of graphics, visualization, and immersive rendering systems for 1X's VR teleoperation platform, creating interfaces for users and operators to understand robot status, interact with live environments, and safely control robots. This role also involves building optimized video/audio transport for low-latency streaming throughout the system.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of professional experience (Senior) or 10+ years (Staff) developing real-time graphics or visualization systems.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Graphics, Games, or a related technical field.
  • Strong experience with C++ and modern graphics APIs such as Vulkan, DirectX 12, Metal, or OpenGL.
  • Experience developing real-time rendering systems, game engines, realtime networking, or VR/XR applications.
  • Strong understanding of 3D graphics, GPU programming, multithreading, networking, and performance optimization.
  • Deep expertise in real-time graphics programming and rendering optimization especially in video/audio/VR.
  • Strong systems thinking with the ability to balance graphics performance, latency, and user experience.
  • Excellent C++ engineering skills with experience building performance-critical software (especially on mobile or VR).
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills across robotics, software, and infrastructure teams.
  • Ability to drive technical direction and deliver complex systems in a fast-moving startup environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience streaming high-bandwidth low-latency realtime data at scale, such as realtime camera video, LiDAR, depth sensors, occupancy maps, or other realtime data.
  • Experience developing VR or mixed reality applications using OpenXR, Unreal Engine, Unity, or similar platforms.
  • Experience building visualization systems for robotics, autonomous vehicles, simulation, VR, or digital twins.
  • Experience developing low-latency highly responsive consumer apps.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of the graphics, visualization, and immersive rendering systems that power 1X's VR teleoperation platform.
  • Build the interfaces consumers and operators rely on to understand robot state, interact with live environments, and safely control humanoid robots.
  • Build optimized video/audio transport to stream at the lowest possible latency all throughout the stack.
  • Design and deliver high-performance, low-latency graphics pipelines that enable responsive VR teleoperation of humanoid robots.
  • Build immersive visualization apps that provide operators with real-time situational awareness using camera feeds, depth data, haptics, audio, and other robot sensor information.
  • Improve rendering performance, responsiveness, and reliability across GPU, CPU, and networking systems to support ultra low-latency real-world robot operations.
  • Partner with software, operator, and technician teams to integrate live robot data into intuitive operator interfaces.
  • Establish scalable graphics architecture and engineering best practices that support the continued growth of 1X's teleoperation platform.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Generous paid time off, company holidays, and parental leave
  • 401(k) plan with company match (100% on the first 3% of contributions, 50% on the next 2%)
  • Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) and Health Savings Accounts (HSA) options
