About The Position

The Senior Test Automation Engineer will design, develop, and maintain test automation frameworks and automated tests for software systems, infrastructure, and applications. The role focuses on API and backend testing, functional and UI automation, system integration, and performance testing, while also supporting exploratory and manual testing as appropriate. The engineer will develop automation for continuous integration and continuous delivery and independently create test strategies, plans, and solutions, taking ownership of features from testing strategy through execution and maintenance. The role provides technical leadership and mentoring to onshore and offshore test engineers across multiple applications and projects. It also involves collaborating with product owners to clarify functionality and resolve issues, enhancements, and upgrades, and applying testing methodologies, best practices, and standards. The position is based in Chicago, with office attendance expected three to five days per week and an eventual full return to office five days per week. The second interview must be attended onsite in Chicago.

Requirements

8–10 years of overall experience in software testing or SDET roles; the posting also specifies 8+ years of experience.
Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.
Strong hands-on Java programming and framework design and development experience; the posting specifies 3–5 years of Java experience and at least 8 years of test automation framework design.
Strong design and development skills in two or more of Java, Cucumber, and JBehave or other BDD testing frameworks; the posting specifies 3–5 years of Cucumber experience.
Strong REST API and web services testing experience; the posting specifies 3+5 years for REST API testing.
Experience with backend testing, UI automation, functional testing, full-stack and third-party integration testing, and end-to-end system integration testing for software platforms.
Good understanding of BDD frameworks and Cucumber; Karate or REST Assured experience.
Proven experience developing test scripts, test cases, and test data.
Ability to write queries in SQL or other relational databases.
At least 3 years of experience developing scenario-based performance testing using JMeter.
Ability to independently develop test strategies, test plans, and automation solutions.
Experience taking ownership of features from testing strategy through execution and maintenance.
Experience mentoring junior team members and conducting pull request reviews.
Ability to adapt quickly to a complex environment; proactive, flexible, and creative approach.
Very strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with developers and business users.
Willingness to attend the second interview onsite in Chicago and work in the office three to five days per week, with an eventual return to five days per week.

Nice To Haves

Hands-on experience with Python.
Development experience with AWS Cloud technology.
Experience with test-driven development, continuous integration, and code review practices.
Experience with Apigee or other API gateways.
Experience with DevOps concepts and tools such as CI/CD, Jenkins, and Git.
At least 2 years working on an Agile team and a solid understanding of Agile/Lean practices.
Understanding of microservice architecture.

Responsibilities

Develop test automation code for continuous integration and continuous delivery of systems, infrastructure, and test frameworks.
Plan, design, develop, and maintain API test automation frameworks for scripting, execution, and analysis of results.
Provide technical leadership and mentor test engineers on multiple applications and projects, including onshore and offshore teams.
Train and mentor project team members to create, execute, analyze, and maintain automated regression suites.
Coordinate with the product owner to resolve open issues, enhancements, and upgrades and to understand functionality as needed.
Develop automated functional scripts using tools such as Java, Karate, and JMeter.
Perform exploratory and manual testing of the product suite as appropriate.
Provide expertise in testing methodologies, best practices, and standards.
Develop test strategies, test plans, test cases, test scripts, and test data, and take ownership of features from testing strategy through execution and maintenance.
Conduct pull request reviews and support code review practices.
