About The Position

The Office of Technology Licensing (OTL) at Stanford University seeks to fill a Senior Technology Licensing Manager, Life Science position, primarily focused on managing inventions in the life sciences space. This role involves collaborating closely with OTL leadership, internal teams, and external stakeholders on contracts and agreements to ensure transparent communication and build consensus. Responsibilities include managing a complex portfolio of inventions, evaluating new inventions, developing licensing opportunities and strategies, advising researchers on intellectual property (IP) matters, administering patent-related activities, and negotiating license agreements. The position requires significant knowledge of negotiation strategies, technology market assessment, IP protection and licensing, and IP clauses in complex sponsored and collaborative research agreements. This is a hybrid role requiring regular presence at the Stanford Work Location (typically two to four days per week) and is a 100% FTE, benefits-eligible position. A background check is required for all final candidates.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a life sciences discipline.
  • Eight years of relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, written, and presentation skills.
  • Strong customer relationship skills, consensus building skills, and ability to cultivate professional business partnerships.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and negotiate with internal constituencies and external business partners.
  • Advanced ability to establish priorities, take ownership and leadership of time-sensitive and complex projects from inception to completion, including strategy development, implementation, and execution.
  • Advanced ability to independently exercise sound judgment and decision-making, creativity, problem-solving, and critical analysis.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize a variety of tasks and demands.
  • Strong computer skills with ability to work with a variety of database systems, spreadsheets, reporting systems, and electronic document management systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in life sciences.
  • Eight or more years of experience working in an academic, health science, or biotechnology organization.
  • MA/MS degree or PhD in Biological Sciences.
  • Demonstrated record of substantial achievement in technology transfer and the application of intellectual property principles as they impact institutions of higher education.
  • Demonstrated expertise and advanced knowledge of contract and IP laws, university policies, life science industry trends, and regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience in business development and ability to negotiate complex license agreements.
  • Negotiation of IP clauses in industry agreements.
  • Demonstrated experience working within the research environment at a major university or institute or private industry.
  • Ability to work with a variety of public institutions.
  • Capacity to produce creative and innovative solutions and approaches to common problems, especially related to intellectual property and licensing.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and analyze complex new invention disclosures with significant licensing potential.
  • Develop licensing strategies for significant cases, identifying potential licensees, negotiating terms, preparing draft agreements, and closing deals.
  • Manage patent-related activities, including attorney selection, filing decisions, and managing unlicensed cases financially.
  • Monitor license agreements for compliance with diligence terms, prepare amendments, process terminations, and decide on litigation.
  • Maintain and develop relations with licensees, monitoring licensed product development progress.
  • Negotiate complex multi-functional agreements involving research funding, IP/licensing terms, procurement terms, or other business elements.
  • Monitor license agreements for compliance with financial, diligent performance, and other contractual terms.
  • Conduct IP due diligence for sponsored research and collaboration agreements.
