Senior Systems Integration Engineer, Battery Systems

BLUE ORIGIN•Seattle, WA
•$156,802 - $219,522

About The Position

This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which includes Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance, and supports manufacturing and supply chain across Blue Origin facilities. The Senior Systems Integration Engineer owns the integration of Blue Origin battery products into programs across the company, helping teams translate mission needs into battery and interface requirements, size and select suitable solutions, and reuse qualified off-the-shelf products where appropriate. The role measures success through reuse and speed, reducing development and qualification costs, schedule, and risk by integrating proven products rather than commissioning one-off designs. The engineer will also combine lessons and requirements from multiple programs into a forward-looking battery product roadmap. The role supports programs from early concept and proposal phases through vehicle integration, testing, and operations, and may require travel to and work at remote integration sites.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 7 years of direct experience in battery, power-system, or electrical-systems integration engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience sizing battery systems from application requirements, including load-profile analysis and energy and power margin assessment.
  • Strong working knowledge of lithium-ion cell selection, chemistry trades, performance and aging behavior, and safety considerations.
  • Experience owning interfaces and interface-control documentation between a component or subsystem and a larger vehicle or system.
  • Experience in a cross-program, applications, or customer-facing technical role requiring influence over decisions not directly controlled.
  • Ability to distill complex technical trades into clear recommendations for engineers, program managers, and executives.
  • Strong organization, teamwork, and written and verbal technical communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively on rapid-development programs.
  • Ability to travel to and work at remote sites supporting integration, commissioning, and training.
  • Passion for Blue Origin’s mission and vision.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in space applications; experience with human-rated systems.
  • Prior applications-engineering or product-line-engineering experience at a cell manufacturer, battery integrator, or OEM.
  • Experience owning or contributing to a technology or product roadmap.
  • Familiarity with spacecraft and launch-vehicle electrical power-system architecture, including BMS, charge control, and power distribution.
  • Experience with requirements-management and systems-engineering tools and processes such as DOORS, Cameo, or Jama.
  • Experience with battery modeling and sizing tools, and scripting for analysis and tool development using Python or MATLAB.
  • Familiarity with applicable standards and requirements such as NASA JSC-20793, AIAA S-122, and UN 38.3.
  • Experience in development of launch vehicles or spacecraft.
  • Experience with safety-critical systems development in automotive, aerospace, medical, or other industries.
  • Experience across multiple portions of the product life cycle.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary technical interface between the battery organization and Blue Origin programs, engaging during concept and proposal phases before architectures are locked.
  • Elicit, define, and negotiate battery and interface requirements, including load and duty-cycle profiles, energy and power needs, environments, mass and volume constraints, mission life, redundancy, and safety and human-rating requirements.
  • Develop and manage standard interface control documents (ICDs) for electrical, mechanical, thermal, data, and ground-support interfaces, and drive closure of interface issues between battery products and host vehicles.
  • Perform battery sizing and trade studies, including load-profile analysis, energy and power margin assessment, thermal and cycle-life implications, and mass, volume, and cost trades.
  • Recommend cell chemistry and battery technology for applications and explain the associated trades and risks.
  • Promote and defend Blue Origin’s catalog of qualified off-the-shelf battery products, guiding programs toward reuse and challenging unnecessary custom development.
  • Own the battery product roadmap by aggregating requirements and demand across programs, identifying product-line gaps, making the business case for new products, and prioritizing with design, test, and manufacturing teams.
  • Create and maintain product datasheets, selection guides, standard ICDs, sizing tools and calculators, application notes, and reference designs to enable self-service.
  • Define and manage the exception path when off-the-shelf products do not fit, including acceptable deviation criteria, waivers, and proposals for new development.
  • Support programs through vehicle integration, test, and operations; review charge and discharge concepts of operations, BMS and power-system interfaces, and ground handling, storage, and transportation plans; and support troubleshooting at integration sites.
  • Provide Supply Chain and program planning with inputs on lead times, quantities, obsolescence, and forward demand.
  • Capture lessons learned and recurring program pain points and use them to inform product improvements and roadmap decisions.
