About The Position

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to serve as the Edifecs Platform Manager for a remote, full-time opportunity supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs. The role leads the Edifecs application support organization, ensuring operational stability, scalability, compliance, and strategic alignment. It provides technical oversight, manages staffing, drives roadmap execution, and partners with product, architecture, vendor, and business teams. The position guides architecture decisions, modernization efforts, cloud scalability, and performance strategies. It configures and maintains Edifecs components, guides EDI Analysts in building and optimizing processing rules and workflows, resolves technical issues, manages platform operations, and supports releases, environment refreshes, patching, and upgrades. The role collaborates with EDI Analysts, DevSecOps Engineers, cloud teams, and business teams. This is a 100% U.S.-based remote, W-2 position. U.S. citizenship is required, and the candidate must possess or qualify for a Public Trust (MBI). Candidates from California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, or Washington will not be considered. Requirements

At least 10 years of professional experience in EDI, healthcare, or enterprise application operations, software or data engineering, with strong AWS experience.
Strong knowledge of EDIFECS architecture and transaction lifecycles.
Strong experience in AWS cloud environments.
Hands-on understanding of Edifecs XEServer, including orchestrations, batch flows, and execution contexts.
Hands-on understanding of XEngine, including validation, rulesets, and canonical structures.
Hands-on understanding of TPM, including trading partner configuration, routes, and agreements.
Hands-on understanding of EDI Gateway visibility, audit, search, and reprocessing.
Hands-on understanding of SpecBuilder, including Implementation Guide definitions and map development.
Experience managing technical aspects of inbound and outbound EDI connectivity using AS2, SFTP, FTPS, and HTTPS channels.
Experience with API-based integrations and gateway services.
Experience in EDI troubleshooting and root-cause analysis of transaction failures, mapping or misalignment defects, partner rejection patterns, batch flow failures, and performance degradation.
Experience with throughput optimization, engine and JVM tuning, memory management, high availability and failover orchestration, and monitoring dashboards.
Understanding of AWS EC2 instance sizing, OS tuning, storage I/O patterns, file transfer endpoints, routing, firewall coordination, network path debugging, and SSL/TLS certificate lifecycle management.
Proficiency with Git and GitHub, including branching strategies, pull requests, and collaborative workflows.
Knowledge of compliance, audit, and partner governance.
Experience with infrastructure as code, including Ansible and Terraform.
Ability to communicate technical architecture decisions and trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
Comfort driving ambiguous architecture decisions to resolution with limited direction.
Experience with Agile methodologies, including Scrum and Kanban, and JIRA.
Strong documentation habits, including architecture diagrams, data dictionaries, and migration runbooks.
Ability to work collaboratively with development, operations, and security teams.
U.S. citizenship is required.
Must possess or qualify for a Public Trust (MBI).

Nice To Haves

EDIFECS certification.
Deep hands-on experience with EDI X12 transaction standards, including medical claims transactions such as 837, 834, and 277, and 270/271 and 278 transactions.
Knowledge of HIPAA compliance requirements in cloud data architecture.
Experience with healthcare payer/PBM systems, clearinghouses, or pharmacy operations.
AWS certification.
A master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

Responsibilities

Lead the Edifecs application support organization as the Edifecs Platform Manager, ensuring operational stability, scalability, compliance, and strategic alignment.
Provide technical oversight, manage staffing, and drive roadmap execution.
Partner with product, architecture, vendor, and business teams.
Guide architecture decisions, modernization efforts, cloud scalability, and performance strategies.
Configure and maintain XEServer, XEngine, Trusted Platform Modules (TPMs), SpecBuilder, and related modules.
Guide EDI Analysts in building, deploying, and optimizing Edifecs processing rules, routing logic, and batch workflows.
Analyze and resolve mapping issues, validation failures, functional errors, and performance bottlenecks.
Manage system logging, Java Virtual Machine (JVM) tuning, and certificate and keystore configurations.
Support release deployments, environment refreshes, patching, and upgrades.
Collaborate with EDI Analysts, DevSecOps Engineers, cloud teams, and business teams.
Troubleshoot EDI transaction failures, mapping defects, partner-specific rejections, batch workflow failures, and throughput or performance degradation.
Optimize job throughput and engine performance, and support high availability, failover orchestration, and monitoring dashboards.
Gather and translate business reporting requirements into technical data models.
Document architecture diagrams, data dictionaries, and migration runbooks.
Collaborate with development, operations, and security teams to support seamless production operations.
