Senior Systems Engineer (C++/Python)

NBCUniversal•New York, NY
•$175,000 - $215,000

About The Position

The Senior Systems Engineer will use C++ to build software powering machine-learning, computer-vision, and 3D-modeling applications. The software uses mathematical techniques to analyze images and create realistic 3D models from real-world data. The role applies current research in artificial intelligence, computer vision, and computer graphics, and involves working with large-scale geospatial datasets to generate 3D content for users. The engineer will manage code using Git and deploy and test it on a cloud platform, interacting with remote machines through a Unix shell. The position works with leadership to understand product vision and customer requirements. It calls for experience designing and building high-performance, efficient C++ systems, particularly optimizing for speed, scalability, and resource management. NBCUniversal’s development and production environments are Linux- and macOS-based; the team uses CMake for project management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of relevant industry experience in a fast-paced, high-growth technology environment.
  • Experience designing and building high-performance, efficient systems using C++, with a focus on optimizing speed, scalability, and resource management.
  • Team-oriented and collaborative approach, with aptitude, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn new methods, tools, practices, and skills.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Confidence using a Unix shell environment, such as bash, for work in Linux- and macOS-based development and production environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with modern C++.
  • A mathematical background covering some subset of linear algebra, probability, and geometry.
  • Experience with Git; Mercurial or another distributed version control system is an acceptable substitute.
  • Experience in game technology, including expertise in Unreal Engine, C++, computational geometry, or computer graphics.
  • Problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • For a development environment preference other than vim/make or Xcode, a convincing demonstration of being able to self-support in that environment.

Responsibilities

  • Implement core machine-learning, computer-vision, and inverse procedural-modeling algorithms in C++, with varying levels of oversight.
  • Apply mathematical techniques from linear algebra, probability, and geometry to algorithm development.
  • Apply research in machine learning, computer vision, and computer graphics.
  • Work with leadership to understand high-level product vision and customer requirements.
  • Use Git for source-code management.
  • Deploy and test code on large-scale geospatial datasets, interacting with remote machines through a Unix shell, and generate 3D content for users.
