Senior Systems Engineer – AV Sensing Design

GM•Sunnyvale, CA

About The Position

General Motors is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to join its AV Sensing Design team and help define how autonomous sensing systems are architected and integrated across GM autonomy programs. The role focuses on system-level decisions involving sensors, embedded software, vehicle platforms, and autonomy software, ensuring sensing solutions are technically sound, aligned with product intent, and practical to execute in production. The engineer will conduct system-level trade studies and support the definition of multi-modality sensor suites, including camera, radar, and lidar. The role involves applying sensor physics, signal processing, and modeling to assess sensor performance and its effects on autonomous vehicle behavior. The engineer will collaborate with AI/ML, platform software, simulation, vehicle integration, perception, localization, and validation teams, documenting technical decisions, trade-offs, and deliverables as systems mature from early development toward deployment. The position is hybrid, with the selected candidate expected to report to a specific location at least three times per week or at another frequency set by their manager. Relocation benefits are available to candidates who qualify under company policy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline.
  • At least 5 years of experience with a bachelor’s degree, including sensor experience.
  • Experience supporting sensor analysis, integration, and cross-domain technical initiatives.
  • Technical depth in signal processing, link analysis, data analysis, or machine learning across at least one relevant sensing modality.
  • Understanding of self-driving challenges and how they map to sensor needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute effectively in complex problem spaces and collaborate across teams.
  • Experience using MATLAB, Python, or another language to support data analysis and analysis-tool development.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s or PhD degree in engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience working on occupantless self-driving autonomous vehicles or advanced remote sensing platforms.
  • Experience with SPAD lidar and/or imaging radars.
  • Experience conducting large-scale sensor data analysis.
  • Experience designing extrinsic calibration and sensor pointing accuracy requirements.
  • Experience with autonomous vehicle behavior modeling and assessment.
  • Experience developing sensor simulation models.
  • Experience designing autonomy use cases involving sensor performance and/or vehicle behaviors and analyzing the resulting information.
  • Experience designing test protocols from lab to vehicle level for performance analysis, simulation model development, or related work.

Responsibilities

  • Execute system-level trade studies for multi-modality sensor system design, supported by detailed modeling of performance and autonomous vehicle behavioral impacts.
  • Develop detailed sensor performance specifications based on a strong understanding of sensor physics and signal processing.
  • Assess sensor performance against product needs, quantify risks and impacts, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with simulation, vehicle integration, perception, localization, and validation teams to manage complex interdependencies.
  • Document technical decisions, trade-offs, and deliverables clearly.

Benefits

  • Relocation benefits are available for candidates who qualify under company policy.
  • GM provides employee well-being and rewards resources; details are available through its Total Rewards resources.
