Senior System Software Engineer, Platform - Server Embedded Firmware

NVIDIA•Santa Clara, CA
•$184,000 - $287,500

About The Position

NVIDIA is seeking a Senior System Software Engineer to design and implement microcontroller firmware for GPU server platforms, particularly for ARM M-class microcontrollers. The role develops C/C++ server manageability features in an RTOS embedded-optimized environment and performs firmware bring-up, debugging, performance analysis, and implementation of manageability features for NVIDIA server platforms. The engineer will develop embedded management software for reporting and connectivity between server management devices and implement register-based communication and DMTF-standard messaging protocols. The position also involves designing a portable microcontroller framework for server management subsystems, writing and reviewing code and design documents, and collaborating with other teams to meet product requirements. The role includes instrumenting code for coverage, automating unit tests, maintaining test case reports, and producing software quality reports using static analysis, code coverage, and microcontroller load measures. The engineer will collaborate with security and hardware teams to align code with security goals, contribute to hardware design and architecture reviews, and develop performance-optimized active monitoring BMC solutions using standards including MCTP, Redfish, SPDM, and PLDM.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 5 years of low-level microcontroller firmware development on embedded microcontrollers using Zephyr or FreeRTOS.
  • Demonstrated experience developing BMC and/or microcontroller firmware for managing CPU, GPU, network, and storage devices.
  • Experience with USB and I3C embedded interfaces.
  • Experience with ARM integrated development environments, debuggers, logic and protocol analyzers, and oscilloscopes.
  • Deep understanding of interrupt schemes, multithreading, DMA, memory management, and resource-restricted embedded environments.
  • Strong embedded programming and scripting skills using languages such as C/C++, Bash, Python, and Go.
  • Experience reviewing and using hardware schematics, reference manuals, and datasheets for embedded development.
  • Expertise in server manageability protocols such as MCTP, PLDM, SPDM, SMBUS, and OCP recovery.
  • Solid understanding of Linux fundamentals, distributions, packages, upgrade mechanisms, and image building and deployment.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on background in microcontroller embedded firmware development and out-of-band management.
  • Hands-on experience implementing an MCTP stack in embedded environments or FPGA.
  • Contribution to industry groups such as Open Compute, OpenBMC, or DMTF, and to open source.
  • Expertise in system software and platform security for x86/ARM-based rack or blade server systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement microcontroller firmware for GPU server platforms, including ARM M-class microcontrollers.
  • Develop C/C++ server manageability features in an RTOS embedded-optimized environment.
  • Bring up, debug, and analyze the performance of microcontroller firmware, and code manageability features for NVIDIA server platforms.
  • Develop embedded management software for reporting and connectivity between server management devices.
  • Implement register-based communication and DMTF-standard messaging protocols for interactions among BMCs, GPUs, switches, memory, I/O expanders, sensors, and local microcontroller peripherals.
  • Design a portable microcontroller framework for use across server management subsystems.
  • Develop and review code and design documents, collaborating with team members to meet product requirements.
  • Instrument code for coverage, automate unit tests, maintain detailed test case reports, and provide software quality reports based on static analysis, code coverage, and microcontroller load.
  • Collaborate with security and hardware teams to align code with security goals and influence hardware design and architecture reviews.
  • Develop performance-optimized active monitoring BMC solutions using DMTF standards such as MCTP, Redfish, SPDM, and PLDM.
