Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer

Micron Technology•Boise, ID

About The Position

Micron Technology’s Systems Integration Group designs and manufactures internal equipment to strengthen the company’s competitive position. The Equipment Software Design team is seeking an embedded firmware engineer to build software ranging from bare-metal firmware to embedded Linux, as well as higher-level interface software. The engineer will work with software and other engineering disciplines to develop custom semiconductor equipment, including next-generation memory testers, and will help support existing testers and designs. The role requires deep understanding of hardware and system behavior. The engineer will design, debug, and optimize software that directly controls custom electronic systems, using schematics, layout drawings, datasheets, and laboratory measurements to investigate software–hardware interactions and root-cause system-level issues. This is a hands-on laboratory role involving collaboration with electrical, mechanical, control, and software engineers, as well as manufacturing and operations teams. The design team is distributed across Boise, San Jose, Penang, and Hyderabad.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent.
  • At least 4 years of embedded software development tightly coupled to custom hardware.
  • Strong proficiency in C and C++.
  • Demonstrated ability to read schematics and trace hardware/software interfaces during debugging.
  • Working knowledge of analog and mixed-signal circuits sufficient to understand signal paths, measurement techniques, and common failure modes.
  • Hands-on experience using lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, digital multimeters, and power supplies to debug real systems.
  • Comfort debugging issues spanning firmware, board-level electronics, and electromechanical interactions.
  • Experience and/or interest in Agentic AI code development and incorporating Agentic workflows into current or future processes.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 5 years of experience in embedded software interfacing with hardware.
  • Python and Bash proficiency.
  • Proficiency in Linux and the GNU toolchain.
  • Ability to explain and debug analog front ends, ADC/DAC paths, and common noise and grounding issues.
  • Experience programmatically interfacing with lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, and source-measure units.
  • Calibration experience.
  • Experience with Linux device interaction, drivers, or kernel-level debugging.
  • Familiarity with PCIe software and hardware layers.

Responsibilities

  • Design new equipment and modify existing equipment as part of cross-discipline teams.
  • Develop and debug software in C and C++ for embedded environments, including bare metal and Linux.
  • Develop and debug C++ and Python software for the hardware interface environment; work with Bash and Python in containers and RHEL-compatible Linux distributions.
  • Work with New Product Introduction and Operations teams in equipment manufacturing.
  • Innovate on equipment designs and solutions that address new challenges.
  • Improve existing designs and respond to manufacturing and production support needs.
  • Perform daily hands-on work with electronics, computers, and in-house and third-party equipment in a laboratory environment.
  • Debug software–hardware interactions using schematics, layout plots, datasheets, and lab equipment to independently root-cause system-level issues.
  • Use lab equipment, schematics, and layout drawings for design bring-up and testing.
  • Work closely with software, electrical, mechanical, and control engineers to design and develop next-generation memory testers and support existing testers.
  • Communicate in writing and verbally, create technical documents, and support globally distributed team members.

Benefits

  • Choice of medical, dental, and vision plans.
  • Programs to help protect income in the event of illness or injury.
  • Paid family leave.
  • Paid time off.
  • Paid holidays.
