Senior Structures Engineer

Radiant Industries•El Segundo, CA
•$133,500 - $184,800•Onsite

About The Position

Radiant is seeking a Senior Structures Engineer to design and develop critical structures for its Kaleidos nuclear microreactor. The role addresses structural design challenges involving efficient and reliable structures that support fission, withstand extreme-temperature environments, and meet volumetric constraints. The engineer will carry out trade studies, select materials, perform detailed structural analysis, and support assembly, integration, and testing. The position will have an instrumental role in advancing the reactor design.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Mechanical, Aeronautical, Civil, or Structural Engineering.
  • At least 6 years of experience designing structures.
  • At least 4 years of experience performing stress analysis using both hand calculations and finite element tools such as Abaqus, Ansys, FEMAP, or similar.
  • Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as necessary to accomplish the mission.
  • Must work 100% onsite at the El Segundo headquarters.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing multi-component assemblies in CAD, such as NX or similar.
  • Experience designing hardware that was manufactured, deployed, and iteratively improved.
  • Experience resolving thermal expansion issues in designs.
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Solid understanding and application of GD&T.
  • Proficiency with both hand-calculation analytical methods and higher-fidelity finite-element analysis methods.
  • Ability to derive free-body diagrams for systems with which one was not previously familiar.
  • Self-motivation and strong organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Experience using text-based software development tools.

Responsibilities

  • Own critical structures, including mass-efficient transportable shielding systems, the container system, and high-temperature graphite and metallic systems.
  • Conduct trade studies and develop designs that meet program requirements.
  • Perform detailed thermomechanical analysis, including static strength and durability or fatigue, and dynamic analysis, including vibration and shock, using hand calculations and finite element tools to determine structural integrity and margins of safety.
  • Develop and execute manufacturing and assembly instructions and test plans.
  • Create and manage a Bill of Materials (BOM).
  • Find and develop suppliers for components.
  • Own subassembly design, manufacturing, and test schedules.
  • Own risk analysis (FMEA) for subsystems.
  • Collect requirements and provide expertise and feedback to engineers in other functional areas through clear, constructive communication.

Benefits

  • Substantial incentive stock plan for all full-time employees.
  • Medical coverage up to the base silver-level plan at 100% for employees and 50% for dependents, with plans up to Platinum available.
