Senior Mechanical Engineer, Structures

Radiant Industries•El Segundo, CA
•$133,500 - $184,800•Onsite

About The Position

Radiant is seeking a highly motivated Senior Mechanical Engineer to design and develop critical structures within its Kaleidos transportable nuclear microreactor. The role addresses structural design challenges involving efficient, reliable systems that facilitate fission while withstanding extreme temperatures and meeting volumetric constraints. The engineer will conduct trade studies, select materials, perform detailed structural analysis, and support assembly, integration, and testing. The position contributes to the development of a new commercial reactor design. The role includes ownership of critical structures and their subassemblies, from requirements and design through manufacturing, testing, and schedule management. The engineer will coordinate with other functional areas and suppliers, communicate technical feedback, and manage subsystem risks. The position is 100% onsite at Radiant’s El Segundo headquarters, with extended hours and weekends as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Mechanical, Aeronautical, Civil, or Structural Engineering.
  • At least 6 years of experience designing structures.
  • At least 4 years of experience performing stress analysis using both hand calculations and finite element tools such as Abaqus, Ansys, FEMAP, or similar.
  • Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends as necessary.
  • Must work 100% onsite at the El Segundo headquarters.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing multi-component assemblies in CAD, such as NX or similar.
  • Experience designing hardware that was manufactured, deployed, and iteratively improved.
  • Experience resolving thermal expansion issues in designs.
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary teams.
  • Solid understanding and application of GD&T.
  • Proficiency with both hand-calculation analytical methods and higher-fidelity finite element-based analysis methods.
  • Ability to derive free-body diagrams for systems with which one was not previously familiar.
  • Self-motivation and strong organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Experience using text-based software development tools.

Responsibilities

  • Own critical structures, including mass-efficient transportable shielding systems, the container system, and high-temperature graphite and metallic systems.
  • Conduct trade studies and develop designs that meet program requirements.
  • Perform detailed thermomechanical analysis, including static strength and durability/fatigue, and dynamic analysis, including vibration and shock, using hand calculations and finite element tools to determine structural integrity and margins of safety.
  • Develop and execute manufacturing and assembly instructions and test plans.
  • Create and manage a Bill of Materials (BOM).
  • Find and develop suppliers for components.
  • Own subassembly design, manufacturing, and test schedules.
  • Own subsystem risk analysis, including FMEA.
  • Collect requirements and provide expertise and feedback to engineers in other functional areas through clear, constructive communication.

Benefits

  • Substantial incentive stock plan for all full-time employees.
  • Medical coverage up to the base silver-level plan at 100% for employees and 50% for dependents, with plans up to Platinum available.
  • Sponsored One Medical memberships for employees and dependents.
  • Vision coverage at 100% for the top-tier plan and 50% for dependents.
  • Dental coverage at 100% for the top-tier plan and 50% for dependents; orthodontia is extra.
  • Voluntary life, accident, hospital, and critical illness coverage, plus commuter benefits and FSA/HSA options, are offered as employee-contributed benefits.
  • Eight weeks of paid parental leave for all parents, with additional paid pregnancy leave for California employees.
