About The Position

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City. The Bureau of Water Supply seeks to hire a Stationary Engineer (Electric) within the Drinking Water Operations (DWO) South Directorate, for a position located in Valhalla, New York. Drinking Water Operations (DWO) is responsible for the operation, maintenance, treatment and quality of three water supply systems and all associated infrastructure that conveys water to New York City. These systems include the Croton, Catskill, and Delaware Systems. The Directorate also operates and maintains seven Water Resource Recovery Facilities (WRRFs), including five collection systems that protect the headwaters of these systems. The directorate provides maintenance and operation of the Croton Water Filtration Plant, Jerome Park and Hillview Reservoirs, the Cat-Del UV Plant, Chlorination and Fluoridation at Delaware Aqueduct Shaft 18, Chlorine Dioxide at Croton Lake Gate House and the Ashokan Chemical Treatment Facility, Pleasantville Alum Plant, and other associated dams, aqueducts, shafts, waterworks, highways, support systems, and offices.

Requirements

  • Five years of full-time satisfactory experience in responsible charge of the operation of plants or facilities utilizing high tension electrical equipment (600 volts or more), including troubleshooting and repairing such equipment, in one or more of the following: electrical generating stations, electrical switching stations, water treatment plants, wastewater treatment plants, water pumping stations, wastewater pumping stations, other collections facilities or high volume ventilation systems; or
  • Two years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in “1" above, and a baccalaureate degree in electrical, civil or mechanical engineering or in electrical, civil or mechanical engineering technology from an accredited college or university; or
  • Four years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in “1" above and an associate degree in science or applied science from an accredited college or university with a major in water quality monitoring, wastewater treatment plant operations, environmental health, environmental control, or in electrical mechanical, or in civil technology, or in electrical, mechanical, or civil engineering technology; or
  • Two years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in “1" above plus three years of full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician; or
  • Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician, including three years of full-time satisfactory experience troubleshooting and repairing high tension electrical equipment (600 volts or more) as that described in “1" above; or
  • A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to “1

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in electrical troubleshooting and repair, including the ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, ladder logic and wiring diagrams
  • Experience in the maintenance and repair of pumps, motors, generators, air compressors, boilers, furnaces including HVAC equipment and controls.
  • Experience with programmable logic controllers (PLC’s).
  • Experience with a Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite including Word and Excel.
  • Stay abreast of latest electrical technology and safety code requirements.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must pay particular attention to Arc Flash risks and ensure staff take measures to mitigate those risks.
  • Capability to navigate Citytime timekeeping program.
  • Ability to manage priorities.
  • Ability to work with a team.
  • Ability to research Operation and Maintenance (O&M) manuals to identify repair parts and supplies.
  • Ability to contact vendors and obtain quotes for repairs and replacement parts.
  • Ability to prepare reports and keep records and files.
  • Ability to review Environmental Health and Safety policies and prepare safe work plans based on established policy.
  • Ability to operate test equipment, including meters, gauges, recording and diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to lift heavy parts, tools and equipment while performing equipment maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the operation, inspection, maintenance, repair, testing and adjustment of equipment, such as generators, pumps, transformers, electric motors, bearings, switchboards, controllers, compressors, meters, gauges, valves, fittings, heating apparatus, converters, rectifiers, controls, and circuit breakers of one or more electrically powered plants, such as pumping stations, sewage treatment plants, etc.
  • Keep records, makes inspections, and prepares reports.
  • Prepare, develops, implements, and assists with maintaining the CMMS for Stationary Engineer (Electric) staff.
  • Guarantees that the Senior SEE is notified in a timely manner of any issues that may arise.
  • Ensures that work is performed safely and efficiently and that crucial deadlines are met.
  • Ability to prioritize daily tasks and rearrange tasks in the event higher priority work arises.
