About The Position

Axon is expanding its cloud platform across AWS, Azure, and devices, and is rebuilding its networking stack from the edge through service-to-service communications and inter-cloud connections. The Senior Staff Software Engineer will serve as the technical leader for this work, setting architecture direction and making decisions to ensure networking is reliable, secure, performant, and suitable for mission-critical public safety use. The role partners with infrastructure, platform, security, and product engineering teams to design intra-cloud and inter-cloud connectivity. The engineer will provide technical leadership across organizations, advise senior leaders on networking and cloud service strategy, mentor technical leaders, and advance large cross-team initiatives through influence. The position also sets group-level AI strategy for engineering and models the use of AI to accelerate engineering work. This role is based in Axon's Seattle office on a hybrid schedule. Team members are expected onsite Tuesday through Friday, with remote work on Mondays, unless an approved workplace accommodation applies. The position reports to the Vice President, Platform Services and has no direct reports.

Requirements

15 or more years of professional software engineering experience with deep networking expertise.
Networking development experience at an established company, with a track record of building and operating networking systems at scale.
Expert knowledge of core networking technologies and protocols, including VPC/VNET, routing, DNS, load balancing, and VPN.
Experience designing and building networking for public cloud environments, ideally AWS and/or Azure.
Hands-on experience using the latest AI engineering tools to accelerate the software development lifecycle.
Proficiency in one or more systems engineering programming languages, such as Go, C, C++, Python, or Java.
A track record of articulating and executing technical strategy.
Strong written and verbal communication and sound decision-making that balances technical and business objectives.
Experience mentoring senior engineers and influencing across teams without direct authority.
High standards of excellence and the ability to raise the bar for other engineers.
Comfort working through ambiguous, high-stakes problems and making steady progress.

Nice To Haves

Experience with multi-cloud or inter-cloud connectivity.
Expertise designing and implementing networking and cloud service architecture compliant with government standards such as FedRAMP and GovRAMP.

Responsibilities

Define the architecture and technical strategy for Axon's cloud networking, including connectivity between clouds.
Lead the redesign of the networking stack from design through production rollout.
Drive technical decisions concerning availability, performance, security, compliance, and cost.
Provide deep technical insight in architecture and design reviews and set a high bar for engineering standards.
Work with infrastructure, platform, security, and product teams to deliver complex cross-team initiatives.
Identify networking and cloud service risks early and advise engineering leadership on investment priorities.
Mentor and coach senior engineers and help develop future technical leaders.
Stay current on cloud computing technologies and introduce approaches that improve systems.
Set group-level AI strategy for engineering and lead by example in using AI to accelerate engineering.
