About The Position

IonQ is seeking a customer-obsessed, systems-minded product leader to define the vision and specifications for software and tooling to manage its quantum fleet. This role will own Fleet Management as a product offering, encompassing telemetry, observability, remote management, incident response, and integration with commercial operations. The goal is to scale operations from per-system management to a high-leverage, coordinated global management of all deployed systems, ensuring high uptime through excellent tools. This is a global role, aiming for a follow-the-sun model supported by a few operations centers.

Requirements

  • Substantial experience in technical product management, ideally with direct ownership of internal platforms, operational tooling, or infrastructure software.
  • Previous careers in engineering, fleet or network operations, process engineering, or systems engineering are highly valued.
  • High agency and high accountability, with the ability to drive impact in ambiguous areas through persistence and adaptability.
  • Product leadership mindset focused on fleet management as an offering and a book of work.
  • Technical fluency to work with SREs and engineers on telemetry, process flows, data pipelines, and API surfaces.
  • Empathy to work closely with those who maintain complex systems.
  • Experience with low volume, high complexity frontier technology, from R&D through to first deployments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex topics clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Operations Research, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
  • 12+ years in technical product management or equivalent roles.
  • Product experience with private cloud deployments, scientific computing, or high-performance computing platforms, including their tools, users, business models, and operational challenges.
  • Experience building or scaling tooling for distributed, high-value physical infrastructure (e.g., data center operations, HPC operations, DCIM, observability stacks, remote field service for scientific instruments or connected hardware).
  • Experience with AI tooling and workflows for rapid prototyping and for predictive, self-healing, or agentic product offerings.
  • Experience taking internal tools to customer-facing products.
  • Familiarity with quantum computing or deep tech R&D.
  • Experience leading and mentoring other product managers.

Nice To Haves

  • Background in quantum computing is not required; focus is on thinking, learning, and leadership abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Treat internal and customer fleet operations, reliability, commercial operations, service, and support teams as customers to understand their workflows, pain points, and needs.
  • Develop a strong point of view on running a resilient, highly available global fleet of quantum computers.
  • Immerse in IonQ's system architecture, control and classical infrastructure, data pipelines, build and maintenance processes, and current tooling.
  • Collaborate with resilience, operations, and engineering leads to understand possibilities, ongoing work, and constraints.
  • Translate operational needs into a clear vision and roadmap for fleet management.
  • Lead cross-functional efforts to simplify, streamline, and ship fleet management solutions.
  • Partner with SRE and engineering to define requirements, sequence work, and implement solutions.
  • Drive build vs. buy decisions and manage vendor selection and rollout.
  • Work with the PMO and relevant teams to improve processes and communication gaps.
  • Establish clear interfaces between Compute Products and operational/commercial teams.
  • Instrument shipped solutions and use feedback, support volume, incident, and availability data to iterate and improve.
  • Feed learnings about operability and maintainability back into future hardware design.
  • Extend the fleet management platform to customers as they take on more system operation.
  • Define and own the vision and roadmap for fleet management, including telemetry, observability, operator tools, SLA/SLO tracking, and maintenance planning.
  • Establish and make visible north star metrics for fleet health and operational effectiveness.
  • Use incident, availability, and support data to iterate and inform future hardware generations.
  • Extend the platform to customers.
