About The Position

Carnegie Mellon University's Mellon College of Science (MCS) is seeking a Senior Sponsored Research Administrator to manage Pre-award Administration for the Departments of Chemistry and Biological Sciences and provide expert-level post-award budget support. This role involves managing the full lifecycle of proposal submissions, ensuring compliance with sponsor requirements, and providing crucial support to faculty and researchers. The position offers a dynamic and challenging work environment within a collaborative research administration team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • At least 5 or more years of sponsored research administration or related business administration experience in an academic setting required.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.

  • NCURA or SRA certification preferred.
  • A combination of education and proven experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Cradle to grave submission of proposals to the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) and Sponsors, including proposal development, budgetary compliance, and completion of representations and certifications.
  • Identify required protocol (e.g., human subjects, animal subjects, rDNA) and disclosure (e.g., conflict of interest) requirements and notify Compliance Administrator.
  • Enter proposal into Sponsor proposal package and complete routing requirements in SPARCS.
  • Work with PIs to organize and assemble proposals, including complex multi-investigator proposals with multiple institutions.
  • Provide daily interaction with faculty, staff, researchers, federal and non-federal sponsors, finance and research representatives from subcontracting institutions, CMU's Office of Sponsored Programs, Office of Research Integrity and Compliance, and Sponsored Projects Accounting Office, as well as campus-wide finance and research administration counterparts.
  • Participate as an active and collaborative member of the Chemistry and Biological Sciences Research Administration team, including team meetings, trainings, and professional development.
  • Provide information and training to principal investigators and others regarding potential funding agencies, agency and sponsor deadlines, and award-specific instructions or restrictions.
  • Advise partners regarding agency or industry sponsor communication and solicitation requirements during review, after submission, and during the award process.
  • Interpret regulations and guidelines for program funding (both university and agency) for multiple moderately complex grants.
  • Provide faculty members with various options and scenarios for proposal planning or work execution (e.g., assessing labor allocation and distribution across multiple awards).
  • Develop budgets for faculty members and assist in proposal creation and submission, including preparation of budgets with multiple subcontractors.
  • Provide reporting to the business manager, department head, and college on proposal and award data for annual and other reporting purposes.
