About The Position

In this role as Senior Specialist, you will be responsible for the Fiber Optic network design, engineering, and execution of projects that provide communication infrastructure and services within Eversource. This will include engineering design and documentation needed for the fiber installation, configuration, and commissioning of fiber optic equipment to provide reliable and diverse communications system wide. Essential Functions: Long-term planning (5-10 yrs.) to support life cycle replacements of communication network infrastructure. Develops obsolete/End-of-life equipment replacement plans. Short term planning to address emergent fiber buildout needs and or restoration of communication systems. Enable Eversource's incremental growth support move/add/change of network services/circuits provided over existing SONET, MPLS or DWDM infrastructure. Develop scope of work documentation in cooperation with multi-discipline team of engineers. Responsible for complete telecom design/documentation, either as initiator/designer or as review/approver. Out Side Plant fiber design, to include; cable specifications, fiber routes, fiber splicing and testing. Work with management to document business justification for new projects. Assists management with budgeting and cash flow projections. Provide configuration documentation to configure Add Drop Multiplexers. Ensures telecom design is in compliance with regulatory requirements (NPCC Dir 4, etc). Participate in site walks with other teams to determine scope of telecom work. Develops bid specifications, solicit quotes and initiates procurement of equipment and contracted services. Create fiber projects and perform Design and Documentation in the GIS Telecom tool. Engineering Design and Review/Approval for all telecom projects and technical oversight of engineering work being completed by vendors. Coordination with Field Operations for equipment installation, troubleshooting, testing, and commissioning as applicable. Maintain and update documentation and records associated with the Transport Network Infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, or equivalent experience in an Electric Utility environment.
  • Five (5) to eight (8) years related experience required.
  • Technical Knowledge/Skill: Frequent use and application of technical standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques
  • Strong knowledge of Telecommunication systems
  • Understanding of Federal and State regulatory criteria and industry standards pertaining to applications, design, installation and operations of telecommunication systems
  • Knowledge of Accounting and Engineering Economic theory and practice
  • Strong knowledge of current Telecommunications issues, practices, technology and related developments
  • Relevant experience to include but not limited to: (1) Teleprotection systems and protective relaying schemes. (2) Out Side Plant fiber design with OPGW and ADSS. (3) Working knowledge of SONET and TDM systems as well as MPLS, DWDM and Ethernet technologies.
