About The Position

We are seeking a motivated and driven Mechanical Engineer to join a dynamic program team focused on the design, development, and qualification of complex mechanical hardware, including precision mechanisms and electro-mechanical systems. The successful candidate will own significant system-level responsibilities and adapt as program needs evolve. The role provides technical leadership and support across the full product lifecycle, including requirements definition, concept generation, material selection, trade studies, design sensitivity and optimization analyses, preliminary and final design, design documentation, and assembly, integration, and testing. Hands-on experience in 3D modeling and critical hardware design and development is needed, along with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team. The role requires willingness to work in a laboratory environment and engage directly with hardware.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 6 years of prior relevant experience; or a graduate degree and a minimum of 4 years of prior related experience; or, in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 10 years of prior related experience.
  • Hands-on experience in 3D modeling and the design and development of critical hardware.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, with limited supervision.
  • Willingness to work in a laboratory environment and engage directly with hardware.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Comfort collecting technical concepts and presenting them to program leadership.
  • Experience designing or developing precision mechanisms, mechatronic systems, or packaging modules and electronics.
  • Experience considering thermal and structural loading.
  • Experience optimizing size, weight, and power.
  • Proficiency with CAD tools such as Creo and understanding of ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing standards.
  • Experience with actuators, custom gear trains, electro-optical systems, or materials testing.
  • Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFM/DFMA) experience.
  • Experience with machined part design, plastic and/or sheet metal part design, additive manufacturing technologies, and design best practices.
  • Understanding of EVMS cost and schedule practices.

Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of assigned tasks while working with limited supervision on high-consequence program activities.
  • Provide regular formal and informal communications and briefings to internal and external stakeholders, including customer representatives.
  • Generate technical data package components, including part and assembly drawings.
  • Prototype, integrate, and test component parts and assemblies.
  • Develop test plans and procedures for mechanical subsystems.
  • Perform testing and evaluation of component parts and systems.
  • Participate in peer reviews, PDRs, CDRs, and other design reviews.
  • Participate in product change review meetings and discussions and implement changes.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary design teams and reviews.
  • Adhere to company processes for product development, configuration management, purchasing, and quality.
  • Direct designers, technicians, and operators as part of a design team.
  • Support field testing and demonstration efforts as a mechanical engineering field representative.
  • Provide technical leadership and support across the product lifecycle, from requirements definition and concept generation through design, documentation, assembly, integration, and testing.
