About The Position

Assurity is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to own the technical health of multiple systems, independently lead large projects, build complex solutions, set engineering standards, resolve complex incidents, and mentor engineers across levels. The role includes using approved AI tools routinely for suitable work while taking ownership of the quality, security, and correctness of all results. The engineer is expected to exercise professional judgment about when to use AI, verify its output, and choose another approach when appropriate. The position combines system design authority and roadmap planning with end-to-end project delivery, software development, agent-directed engineering, risk-based verification, CI/CD operations, on-call incident response, documentation, and team mentorship. The engineer collaborates with technical and business partners, maintains skills through ongoing training, and helps evaluate emerging technologies and AI capabilities for fit with system roadmaps. The team works iteratively, bringing working versions to users quickly, refining requirements based on feedback, and hardening solutions through development, test, staging, and production. Team members are expected to make reversible decisions promptly, show working examples, remain open to reworking proofs of concept, own changes through production use, and maintain decision notes, tests, requirements, and agent context files. This position is remote with occasional on-site attendance. Travel arrangements and team collaboration hours are communicated for the specific opening. The role participates in a rotating on-call schedule after training, including nights and weekends, and may involve occasional scheduled evening or weekend work for production deployments, cutovers, data migrations, and go-lives. Work may exceed 40 hours per week. Applicants in CA, CO, DC, HI, IL, MA, MD, MN, NV, NJ, NY, RI, VT, and WA are not currently being considered.

Requirements

  • Typically 6 or more years of professional software development experience, including leading an initiative end to end and serving as the recognized go-to engineer for a system.
  • A sustained portfolio of systems shipped iteratively with AI agents, including reusable workflows, specifications, and verification practices used by others on the team, and sound judgment in verifying output; the interview includes a live build exercise.
  • Experience owning the design and technical health of production systems, including design patterns, performance, reliability, security, and production monitoring.
  • Experience leading large projects end to end, including planning scope, cost, and schedule, with or without an assigned business analyst, and working directly with business users and stakeholders.
  • Deep experience with relational database systems such as SQL Server or PostgreSQL, object-oriented programming, and web application development, plus experience with document or graph data.
  • Experience building interfaces using modern HTML/CSS and building functional solutions using more than one of the following: Vue, Angular, JavaScript, C#, TypeScript, Python, .NET MVC, Entity Framework, or REST APIs.
  • Ability to design and implement unit and integration tests and lead troubleshooting and resolution of complex production issues.
  • Experience with modern IDEs, preferably Visual Studio; modern source control and CI/CD release pipelines, preferably Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, and Git; Linux and container operations; Agile processes; and modern data formats, preferably JSON and XML.
  • Experience mentoring and coaching engineers across experience levels, and ability to make technical decisions quickly and explain tradeoffs.
  • Strong problem diagnosis, troubleshooting, and creative problem-solving skills; professional written and verbal communication with technical and business partners and leaders; and organizational skills to manage multiple tasks within timeline and budget constraints, with business acumen.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced remote team environment and learn rapidly and master diverse technologies and techniques.
  • Talent required in values, work intensity, achiever, positivity, resourcefulness, command, relationship-extension, and exactness.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to participate in a rotating on-call schedule after training, including nights and weekends, remain reachable while on call, and respond promptly to production alerts within defined response times and escalation paths.
  • Consistent and reliable attendance.

Nice To Haves

  • Claude Code or similar agentic tools; hands-on model API integration, context and retrieval design, tool use, and evaluation; n8n; or MCP.
  • Python/FastAPI; TypeScript, Next.js, and React; PostgreSQL and SQL Server; Kafka or Redpanda event streaming; Neo4j; Podman or Docker; GitHub Actions; Grafana and Prometheus; LDAP/Active Directory; Azure; or Azure DevOps or Jira.
  • Insurance or financial services systems and enterprise integration experience.
  • Relevant technical, analysis, cloud, insurance, or leadership certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as design authority for assigned applications, platforms, and systems; determine system components, design patterns, performance, reliability, and implementation approaches, and guide design decisions.
  • Plan technical direction and near-term roadmaps for multiple systems; manage technical debt, performance, and reliability; and keep systems maintainable, secure, stable, and fit for purpose.
  • Document design decisions and implementation guidance, and participate in solution design, reviews, and troubleshooting throughout delivery.
  • Lead large projects independently from intake through specification, design, build, UAT, and rollout, with or without an assigned business analyst; manage scope, cost, and schedule, and raise tradeoffs early.
  • Write stories and acceptance criteria and confirm requirements and completed work directly with business users and stakeholders.
  • Direct AI agents to build and harden complex services, multi-agent workflows, and integrations from proof of concept to production; lead difficult changes and write code by hand when appropriate.
  • Integrate data from back-end services and databases, and maintain, expand, and scale enterprise-level software.
  • Set team standards for testing, verification, evaluations, guardrails, observability, security, performance, cost, and CI/CD promotion within department standards.
  • Own and maintain a piece of the team's shared context, such as repository instruction files, skills, review checklists, specifications, templates, and context practices.
  • Design reusable agent workflows for larger work, lead orchestration and multi-agent design where valuable, and model agent-directed development.
  • Establish team verification strategies and review practices for AI-generated changes, identify recurring failure modes, ensure review coverage, and personally review the highest-risk changes.
  • Write unit and integration tests and evaluations; verify agent-produced changes through testing, debugging, and risk-appropriate review before release.
  • Create and maintain software documentation for the systems.
  • Promote changes through CI/CD release pipelines across development, test, stage, and production, and follow changes through to production use.
  • Take on-call shifts, monitor systems, improve alerting and recovery, serve as the on-call escalation point, lead complex production incident resolution, and follow up on root causes.
  • Assist at least two teammates in AI fluency, with evidence in their portfolios; mentor engineers across levels and IT and teach effective delegation to agents.
  • Partner with Software Solution Architects on system and platform patterns, share design context, and turn proven patterns into shared practices.
  • Collaborate with engineers, business systems analysts, product owners, project managers, operations, and business leaders; estimate and log time daily, provide status updates, and demonstrate project functionality.
  • Maintain skills through ongoing training and study, including AI fluency courses, and evaluate emerging trends and AI capabilities for system roadmaps.
  • While on call, respond promptly to production alerts, take immediate containing actions when needed, and record a brief incident note.
  • Participate in occasional scheduled evening or weekend production deployments, cutovers, data migrations, and go-lives.
