About The Position

Workato is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to build the distributed backend powering its AI agent platform and related developer-facing products. The work includes event-driven services, real-time integrations, and APIs that help agents reliably perform work. The systems must remain correct and available as the platform scales toward 1 million users over the next year. The engineer will drive features end-to-end, from ideation and architecture through deployment, observability, and iteration, while contributing to code quality, reviews, and mentorship.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of experience shipping and operating production backend systems at scale.
• Strong proficiency in Python and the judgment to write clean, well-tested, maintainable code.
• Deep distributed-systems fundamentals, including designing for correctness and availability under partial failure, backpressure, and load.
• Hands-on experience with event-driven, streaming, or real-time systems, such as queues, pub/sub, or long-lived connections.
• Comfort operating production services on Kubernetes in the cloud and instrumenting them with metrics, tracing, and dashboards.
• Solid API and software-architecture instincts, including the ability to make and defend sensible trade-offs in ambiguous situations.
• High agency and ownership: able to drive work from ambiguity through delivery and iteration without waiting to be told.
• A reliability mindset and ability to design for failure, not just the happy path.
• Product-minded approach and care for the users of the products being built.
• Use of modern AI tooling in daily work and staying current with its capabilities.
• Excellent written communication for an asynchronous, written-work culture.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with LLMs, agentic systems, or developer-facing products such as MCP, RAG, APIs, SDKs, or CLIs.
• Familiarity with the stated stack: Python, FastAPI, Postgres, Kubernetes, and AWS; prior experience with every component is not required.

Responsibilities

• Build event-driven, horizontally scalable backend services that process work reliably and correctly, including when parts of the system fail.
• Build real-time surfaces and integrations, including streaming connections, gateways, and CLIs, that hold up under load.
• Integrate LLMs and agentic harnesses into production systems.
• Drive features end-to-end, from ideation and architecture through deployment, observability, and iteration.
• Raise the engineering bar through clean, well-tested code, thoughtful reviews, and mentorship.
