Senior Software Engineer (C++)

Overland AI•Seattle, WA
•$150,000 - $230,000•Onsite

About The Position

Overland AI is seeking an exceptional Software Engineer to strengthen the behavior and planning backbone of its autonomy stack. The role bridges algorithmic research and physical deployment, with responsibility for the reliability, performance, and architecture of the robotic software system. The engineer works across perception, planning, and controls, contributing both to fault-tolerant distributed system design and low-level optimization of C++ algorithms for edge hardware. The position is located in Seattle, Washington. The annual pay range is $150,000–$230,000; the actual level and base salary may vary based on job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience. The role may involve access to export-controlled technology, and employment is contingent on the ability to comply with U.S. export control laws.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience developing and deploying production-level code.
  • Expertise in modern C++ (C++17/20) in large distributed systems.
  • Proficiency in Python sufficient to read and understand code.
  • Rigorous understanding of data structures, algorithm complexity, concurrent programming (including multithreading, atomics, and lock-free design), and memory management.
  • Proven experience with advanced profiling and debugging tools, such as GDB and perf.
  • Demonstrated experience developing in and modifying complex, data-heavy, or distributed software systems.
  • Comfort operating amid uncertainty, rapid requirement changes, and ambiguity, and breaking complex tasks into actionable work.
  • Strong commitment to code quality and cleanliness, and ability to recognize and improve anti-patterns and unnecessary complexity.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience deploying software on physical robotic systems, autonomous vehicles, or aerospace platforms.
  • Familiarity with off-road navigation, unstructured terrain, and adversarial communications or GPS environments.
  • Working understanding of 3D geometry, linear algebra, or kinematics.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement robust, fault-tolerant software architectures for autonomous operations.
  • Define inter-process communication patterns, data flows, and state management, primarily across the behavior and planning stack.
  • Profile, benchmark, and optimize critical-path C++ code to reduce latency, ensure contracts, and improve compute efficiency on edge hardware.
  • Collaborate with perception, motion planning, and controls experts to integrate algorithms and models into a cohesive, production-grade software system.
  • Build system observability and resilience infrastructure, including logging, debugging, and offline evaluation hooks.
  • Troubleshoot system-level issues, including race conditions, memory leaks, and timing problems across subsystem boundaries.

Benefits

  • Equity compensation
  • Healthcare, dental, and vision plans
  • Flexible PTO
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Parental leave
