Senior Software Engineer- Rust / C++

Thomson Reuters•Frisco, TX
•$94,900 - $176,300

About The Position

Thomson Reuters is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to build and evolve the document-processing platform behind its AI products. The queue-driven platform processes millions of pages each day into clean, structured output, powers products such as Westlaw and CoCounsel, and serves product teams across the company. The role focuses primarily on Rust services in DU Core, with regular work in the C#/.NET DU Apps services that sit in front of the core platform. The position is also identified as Senior Software Engineer II and involves leading high-impact projects, shaping platform evolution, and setting engineering standards.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of professional software development experience building and operating production backend services in Rust or C++; candidates with a C++ background should be keen to work in Rust day to day.
  • Experience leading complex cross-team projects, including architecture for multi-region or highly available systems.
  • Experience designing features for privacy and compliance requirements and implementing those requirements in code.
  • Deep distributed-systems expertise, including message queues, at-least-once delivery, idempotency, backpressure, retries, timeouts, failure detection, and autoscaling.
  • Experience selecting storage options, including relational and NoSQL systems, for specific workloads.
  • A record of performance engineering at scale, including profiling, benchmarking, memory budgets, concurrency limits, and handling inputs that do not fit in memory.
  • Experience producing written design work such as design documents, ADRs, or RFCs that compare options and drive decisions, and translating ambiguous requests into scoped, testable requirements.
  • Strong software development fundamentals, including unit, integration, and load-testing strategies, security-conscious defaults, and incremental delivery through CI/CD.
  • Experience mentoring engineers, with strong code-review and technical-writing skills.
  • Hands-on experience with agentic development tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot.
  • Ownership mindset, including following work into production, leading root-cause analysis, and addressing discovered issues.
  • Willingness to participate in the team’s on-call rotation.
  • Willingness to work in C#/.NET and learn it if necessary.
  • Must be located in the United States.
  • Must be a U.S. Person and legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Rust experience, including Tokio async, type-modeled errors, and performance and memory tuning.
  • Daily, critical use of AI coding agents, including knowing when not to trust their output.
  • Experience developing or improving AI-agent developer tooling, such as prompts and skills, MCP servers, multi-agent review, or agent-output evaluation.
  • Experience with document AI, OCR, or file processing, such as PDF internals, format conversion, or very large inputs.
  • Experience integrating multiple third-party vendors behind an abstraction, with health-based routing or failover.
  • Cloud and container platform experience, preferably Azure, including Kubernetes autoscaling and multi-region deployment.
  • Professional C#/.NET experience.
  • Experience in regulated environments, such as FedRAMP, HIPAA, CJIS, FIPS 140 cryptography, or supply-chain controls such as SBOMs and dependency bans.

Responsibilities

  • Translate requests from product owners and consuming teams into clear, scoped functional and technical requirements, including acceptance criteria, non-goals, affected traffic, and success measures.
  • Write design documents and architecture decision records that compare options and explain trade-offs across cost, latency, quality, failure modes, operability, and security.
  • Shape service architecture, deployment, and operation on Azure, including service boundaries.
  • Use production metrics, profiling, latency distributions, traffic mix, benchmarks, and load tests to identify and address performance bottlenecks; establish timeouts, limits, concurrency, and rollout plans.
  • Build and operate the queue-driven document-processing pipeline, including autoscaling, rate limiting, retries, third-party vendor failover, very large inputs, bounded-memory streaming, latency, and throughput.
  • Work primarily on Rust backend services and pivot to C#/.NET customer-facing services as needed.
  • Coordinate safe changes to message schemas, APIs, and feature flags across services and repositories; maintain additive, backward-compatible changes and provide rollout and rollback plans and actionable errors.
  • Use simple designs, deliver changes in small reviewable steps, test at appropriate layers, and improve existing code.
  • Create specifications and plans for coding agents, break work into reviewable tasks, verify agent output with tests and evidence, evaluate AI tools, and retain responsibility for correctness.
  • Improve agent instructions, skills, and review automation, and measure their effectiveness; write clear code, documentation, and pull requests.
  • Instrument services, participate in on-call and incident response, write blameless postmortems, and implement lasting fixes.
  • Lead high-impact projects from requirements through production, decompose them into deliverable work, and maintain the technical vision.
  • Mentor engineers and establish standards for code and design reviews.
  • Translate business needs into technical solutions, communicate trade-offs to technical and non-technical audiences, and influence product and platform decisions with teams and leadership.
