Senior Software Engineer- Rust / C++

Thomson Reuters•Eagan, MN

About The Position

Thomson Reuters is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to build and evolve the document-processing platform behind its AI products. The queue-driven platform processes millions of pages per day into structured output and supports products including Westlaw and CoCounsel, as well as internal product teams. The role focuses primarily on Rust services in DU Core, with regular work in C#/.NET services in DU Apps. As a Senior Software Engineer II, you will lead high-impact projects across Core and Apps, shape the platform’s architecture and evolution, and raise the team’s technical standards. You will turn ambiguous needs into scoped requirements, document and explain design trade-offs, and design, build, operate, and improve services running on Azure. You will own work from planning through production, including performance and reliability, safe cross-service changes, incident response, and mentoring. The role also involves using and evaluating coding agents while remaining accountable for the correctness of all merged work. The position requires at least seven years of professional backend software development experience in Rust or C++, and the ability and willingness to work in C#/.NET. Candidates must be located in the United States, be a U.S. Person, and be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship. Participation in the team’s on-call rotation is required. The role may be eligible for an annual bonus. The stated U.S. base compensation range is $94,900–$176,300, varying by location and individual factors. The posting closes January 31, 2027.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of professional software development experience building and operating production backend services in Rust or C++; C++ candidates must be keen to work in Rust day to day.
  • Experience leading complex cross-team projects, including architecture for multi-region or highly available systems.
  • Experience designing features with privacy and compliance requirements and implementing those requirements in code.
  • Deep distributed-systems expertise, including message queues, at-least-once delivery, idempotency, backpressure, retries, timeouts, failure detection, and autoscaling.
  • Experience selecting storage technologies, including relational and NoSQL options, for specific workloads.
  • A record of performance work at scale, including profiling, benchmarking, memory budgets, concurrency limits, and handling inputs too large to fit in memory.
  • A track record of written design work, such as design documents, ADRs, or RFCs, that compares options and drives decisions, and of turning ambiguous requests into scoped, testable requirements.
  • Strong software development fundamentals, including testing across unit, integration, and load levels; security-conscious defaults; and incremental delivery through CI/CD.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and strong code-review and technical-writing skills.
  • Hands-on experience with agentic development tools, such as Claude Code, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot.
  • Ownership of work through production, including leading root-cause analysis and addressing identified issues.
  • Willingness to participate in the team’s on-call rotation.
  • Willingness to work in C#/.NET and learn it if necessary.
  • Must be located in the United States.
  • Must be a U.S. Person and legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Rust experience, including async development with Tokio, type-modeled errors, and performance and memory tuning.
  • Daily, critical use of AI coding agents, including knowing when not to trust their output.
  • Experience building or improving AI-agent developer tooling, such as prompts and skills, MCP servers, multi-agent review, or evaluation of agent output.
  • Experience with document AI, OCR, or file processing, including PDF internals, format conversion, or very large inputs.
  • Experience integrating multiple third-party vendors behind an abstraction, with health-based routing or failover.
  • Cloud and container-platform experience, preferably Azure, including Kubernetes autoscaling and multi-region deployment.
  • Professional C#/.NET experience.
  • Experience in regulated environments, such as FedRAMP, HIPAA, CJIS, FIPS 140 cryptography, or supply-chain controls such as SBOMs and dependency bans.

Responsibilities

  • Translate requests from product owners and consuming teams into clear, scoped, testable functional and technical requirements, including acceptance criteria, non-goals, affected traffic, and measures of success.
  • Write design documents and architecture decision records that compare options and explain trade-offs involving cost, latency, quality, failure modes, operability, and security.
  • Define service architecture, deployment, operations, and service boundaries on Azure.
  • Use production metrics, profiling, latency distributions, and traffic patterns to identify bottlenecks and set timeouts, limits, concurrency, and rollout plans.
  • Use benchmarks and load tests to support performance decisions and communicate what results demonstrate and do not demonstrate.
  • Build and operate the queue-driven document-processing pipeline, including autoscaling, rate limiting, retries, vendor failover, large-input handling, and bounded-memory streaming while balancing latency and throughput.
  • Work primarily on Rust backend services and pivot to C#/.NET services when needed.
  • Coordinate safe changes to message schemas, APIs, and feature flags across services and repositories; maintain backward compatibility and provide rollout and rollback plans and actionable errors.
  • Use simple designs, deliver small reviewable changes, test at appropriate layers, and improve existing code.
  • Write specifications and plans for coding agents, break work into reviewable pieces, verify agent output with tests and evidence, and evaluate AI tools for specific use cases.
  • Improve agent instructions, skills, and review automation; assess whether these tools are effective and write clear code, documentation, and pull requests.
  • Instrument and operate services in production, participate in on-call and incident response, write blameless postmortems, and implement lasting fixes.
  • Lead large projects from requirements through production, decompose work into deliverable pieces, and maintain the project’s technical direction.
  • Mentor engineers and set standards in code and design review.
  • Translate business needs into technical solutions, communicate trade-offs to technical and non-technical audiences, and influence product and platform decisions with teams and leadership.
